Pirates Hold Off CCSU In Overtime On Saturday
11/26/2016 6:46:00 PM | Women's Basketball
SOUTH ORANGE, N.J. – The Seton Hall women's basketball team (4-1) held off Central Connecticut State (1-4) in overtime, 78-70, on Saturday afternoon at Walsh Gym. The contest was the second semifinal of the 2016 SHU Thanksgiving Classic, with the Pirates advancing to face UT-Arlington in the championship game on Sunday.
The Pirates led for the majority of the contest, falling behind only briefly early in the fourth quarter before responding with a big run to jump back ahead. The Blue Devils pulled back within a possession the final minute before drilling a half-court shot as time expired to force in overtime. In the extra frame, The Hall out-scored the Blue Devils 15-7 to hang on for the victory.
Kaela Hilaire (Floral Park, N.Y.) led all scorers with a career-high 24 points, the first 20-point outing of the freshman's career. The Pirates also got double-doubles from both Lubirdia Gordon (Mount Vernon, N.Y.) who had 13 points and 15 rebounds and LaTecia Smith (Gardenia, Calif.) who finished with 13 and 10 along with six assists. Claire Lundberg (Andover, Minn.) was the fourth Pirate in double-figures with 16 points, knocking down four 3-pointers and tying a career-high with eight rebounds.
Turning Points
After leading throughout regulation, the Pirates saw themselves down for the first time since the opening minutes after CCSU's Aleah Epps (19 points) hit a pair from the stripe to make it 51-50 with 7:06 to play. The Hall answered in a big way, reeling off a 9-0 run sparked by five-straight from Hilaire to swell the lead back to eight with 4:06 to play.
CCSU would answer, battling back with a 7-0 run of its own to pull within one and keep it a one-possession game through the remainder of regulation. With under five seconds to play Smith hit 1-of-2 from the line to make it 63-60, before Kiana Patterson launched one from near midcourt that hit nothing but net as time expired to force overtime.
In the extra period, both sides traded points before a Smith lay-in with 2:49 to play gave SHU a 69-67 advantage. The basket sparked a 10-0 run for the Pirates over 2:30 of game action, including five points from Hilaire and three from Gordon that put the contest out of reach.
