Pirates Fall To UTA In Thanksgiving Classic Finale
11/27/2016 6:29:00 PM | Women's Basketball
SOUTH ORANGE, N.J. – The Seton Hall women's basketball team (4-2) dropped the championship game of the 2016 SHU Thanskgiving Classic to UT-Arlington (5-0) by a score of 86-61 on Sunday afternoon at Walsh Gymnasium. The setback snapped a 28-game streak of home non-conference victories for The Hall, which stood as the third-longest in the nation.
Kaela Hilaire (Floral Park, N.Y.) led the Pirates with 15 points of 5-of-11 shooting in the setback, also notching a team-high five assists and three steals. JaQuan Jackson (Killeen, Texas) added 14 points in her first game action since Nov. 15, while Deja Winters (Richmond Heights, Ohio) was the third Pirate in double-figures with 11 points off the bench.
The Pirates took an early lead but fell behind after a quarter, before the Lady Mavericks used a big run in the second quarter to balloon their lead to double digits at halftime. The Hall battled to within 10 early in the third period but ultimately would get no closer the rest of the way.
Turning Point
The Hall opened the contest strong, grabbing a 13-8 lead with 4:19 remaining in the first quarter after a Shadeen Samuels (Ossining, N.Y.) put-back. The Lady Mavericks would respond by scoring 10 of the final 11 points in the opening frame to take an 18-14 lead into the second quarter. The next frame opened with more of the same, as UTA pressure led to a 13-0 run to begin the second quarter to open up a 17-point advantage. The Hall would be unable to get the lead back to single-digits the rest of the way.
