12/13/2016 10:07:00 PM | Women's Basketball
PISCATAWAY, N.J. – The Seton Hall women's basketball team (6-4) dropped a defensive struggle at Rutgers (3-9) on Tuesday night, falling by a score of 53-45 at the Rutgers Athletic Center. JaQuan Jackson (Killeen, Texas) led all scorers for The Hall with 21 points in the setback.
The Pirates led by 11 at the break after a huge second quarter but went cold in the second half, scoring only 16 points over the final 20 minutes. Jackson finished as the only Pirate to score in double-figures, while Aliyah Jeune (18 points) and Khadaizha Sander (17 points, 10 assists) paced the Rutgers offense.
Turning Points
After falling down 10-2 early in the first quarter, the Pirates pulled within four after one before reeling off a 16-2 run to close the second frame to go up 29-18 heading into the half. Rutgers responded with a 20-8 edge in the third quarter, with the contest going back-and-forth throughout the fourth.
With 3:00 remaining and the score level at 43-all, Lubirdia Gordon (Mount Vernon, N.Y.) took a feed from Shadeen Samuels (Ossining, N.Y.) for a lay-in that put the Pirates ahead 45-43. Both squads traded timeouts and empty possessions following the basket, before Jeune knocked down her second 3-pointer of the game with 1:44 on the clock to allow Rutgers to pull ahead. That basket sparked a 10-0 run for the Scarlet Knights to close the contest and seal their victory.
