Pirates Surge Past LIU Brooklyn On Kids Day
12/7/2016 3:00:00 PM | Women's Basketball
SOUTH ORANGE, N.J. –The Seton Hall women's basketball team (6-3) turned in its most efficient offensive performance of the season en route to a 77-59 victory over LIU Brooklyn (1-7) on Wednesday at Walsh Gymnasium. JaQuan Jackson (Killeen, Texas) led all scorers with 19 points and Shadeen Samuels (Ossining, N.Y.) poured in a career-high 18 in front of 1,265 fans on Kids Day at Walsh.
The Pirates exploded out of the gate, scoring a season-high 50 points in the first half to build a 23-point lead at the break. The Blackbirds fought back in the second half to pull as close as nine, but a strong fourth quarter helped the Pirates close out the double-digit victory. Seton Hall shot 50.0 percent from the floor and dished out 21 assists in the win, both season-bests.
Kaela Hilaire (Floral Park, N.Y.) led the shared offensive effort with a career-high nine assists against only one turnover, while LaTecia Smith (Gardenia, Calif.) added five helpers and finished with her second career double-double with 12 points and 10 rebounds. Lubirdia Gordon (Mount Vernon, N.Y.) was the fourth Pirate in double-figures, going for 15 points for the second-straight contest on 7-of-10 shooting.
Turning Points
After an up-and-down start for both sides, the Pirates led 14-10 midway throughout the first quarter. Following the first media stoppage, The Hall reeled off a 10-0 run over the final 4:50 of the opening frame to take a 24-10 lead into the second quarter. The Hall ballooned its lead to 37-14 with a Jackson 3-pointer at 6:26 of the third, finishing the first quarter on a 13-5 run to take a 50-27 lead to the locker room.
The Blackbirds fought back, and a cold shooting spell in the third quarter helped LIU pull within nine at 63-54 with 5:22 on the clock in the fourth. Seton Hall responded with a 14-2 run to push the lead back to 21 in the final minute of regulation and close out the win. Jackson scored six points during the final offensive spurt while Gordon and Samuels both added four.
