McGovern's Golden Goal Lifts Pirates to Win at Army
8/22/2016 9:28:00 PM | Women's Soccer
West Point, N.Y. - Freshman Siobhan McGovern (Cranford, N.J.) shook loose from her defender in the 97th minute of the Seton Hall women's soccer team's match at Army West Point, received a pass from sophomore Tanika Roach (Somerset, N.J.) and put home the golden goal to break a scoreless tie and send the Pirates to a 1-0 victory Monday night at Clinton Field. The victory is Seton Hall's first of the season, evening the Pirates' regular season record at 1-1-0. Army fell to 0-2-0.
The golden goal made a winner out of a Seton Hall team that had the better of the chances on the night as the Pirates out-shot Army West Point, 13-10.
GOALS
- 97th Minute: McGovern took a long ball pass from Roach and went 1-on-1 with the Army goalkeeper, who made the inital save, but McGovern pushed the rebound into the net.
In the 96th minute, Army West Point attacked into the box and attempted a centering pass that the Pirates deflected and kicked out of the box. Roach picked up the ball just outside of the box and pushed forward. Two Black Knight defenders converged on Roach, but she hit a long ball over them just as she was about to get hit. The ball found its way to a running McGovern, who went 1-on-1 with goalkeeper Jordan Cassalia. Cassalia made the initial diving stop on McGovern's attempt, but she never got control of the ball, which trickled back to McGovern, who then pushed it into the net as she was hit by another defender.
