Maier Leads The Hall To Victory In Home Opener
8/29/2016 10:52:00 PM | Women's Soccer
SOUTH ORANGE, N.J. – Behind a big night from senior captain Frankie Maier (Oradell, N.J.) the Seton Hall women's soccer team (2-1-0) handed Quinnipiac (2-1-1) its first loss of the 2016 campaign with a 2-1 victory on Monday night at Owen T. Carroll Field. The contest marked the home opener for the Pirates and kicked off a three-game homestand.
After Maier assisted on an equalizing goal from Marissa Aniolowski (Enfield, Conn.) to erase an early QU lead, the midfielder buried a 19-yard direct free kick to put the Pirates ahead in the 36th minute. The Pirates held the advantage the rest of the way, with reigning BIG EAST Goalkeeper of the Week Anna MacLean (Thunder Bay, Ontario) making two of her four saves in a shutout second half.
The victory marked Seton Hall's second-straight triumph, a first for the program since winning three in a row from Sept. 18-29, 2013. It also signified the first win in a home opener under third-year head coach Rick Stainton.
Turning Point
With the scored tied at 1-1 after 35 minutes of first half action, Lauren Dao (Collegeville, Pa.) worked deep into the attacking third and was fouled at the edge of the penalty area. Maier stepped up for the free kick and fired a curling shot into the top left corner of the net to give the Pirates a 2-1 lead.
