Daytona Beach, Fla. - Junior Christiana Rutkowski (Middletown, N.J.), headlined seven members of the Seton Hall women's cross country team who finished in the top 25 as the Pirates raced their way to a team victory at the 2016 Embry-Riddle Asics Classic Saturday in a 5K race on the campus of Embry-Riddle University. Rutkowski, who was also the team's top finisher two weeks ago at Monmouth, clocked in at 19:54.54, good for a sixth-place finish overall and less than one minute off the winning time. This was the team's first victory since taking the St. John's/Hofstra Fall Festival on Sept. 7, 2014.
Though she finished sixth, Rutkowski actually finished third among scoring collegiate runners, finishing only behind a pair of Bethune-Cookman competitors. She has now led the Pirates in all 11 meets she has competed for The Hall.
Rutkowski was joined in the top 10 by sophomore Kiley Britten (Crystal Lake, Ill.), who placed eighth overall and fourth among the collegiate runners with a time of 20:02.09.
The Pirates then had three finishers between 11 and 20, led by senior Desyre Blackburn (Aloha, Ore.), who finished 11th with a time of 20:21.43. Junior Emily Johnson (Wildwood Crest, N.J.) was right behind Blackburn in 12th with a time of 20:36.68. Continuing her very strong start to her collegiate career, freshman Kassandra Yocco placed 19th overall and 14th among collegiate scorers with a time of 21:24.19.
The strong performances continued as the Pirates placed three more in the top 28 among the 62 total racers. Sophomore Olivia Gregorio (Kingston, Pa.) finished 24th with a time of 21:50.69, junior Bailey Seach (Winston-Salem, N.C.) ran a 21:54.08 for a 25th-place finish and freshman Isabella Whelan came in 28th with a time of 22:10.61.
The Pirates will now look to use the momentum of Saturday's victory to get ready for a competitive Metropolitan Championship, which takes place on Friday, Oct. 7 at Van Cortlandt Park in the Bronx.
