Jimenez, Spindler Power Pirates To Draw With Penn
9/5/2016 10:40:00 PM | Men's Soccer
SOUTH ORANGE, N.J. – Playing a man down for all but seven minutes of a double overtime affair, the Seton Hall men's soccer team (1-2-1) gutted out a 1-1 draw with Penn (0-0-2) on Monday night at Owen T. Carroll Field. Jonathan Jimenez (Cape Coral, Fla.) scored his first career goal in the first half and Julian Spindler (Weiserbach, Germany) made seven saves to lead the way for the Pirates.
After a red card in the 7th minute, the Pirates pressed on and found a go-ahead goal in the 24th minute. Andres Arcila (Cartagena, Colombia) gained possession near midfield and fired a long through-ball ahead to Jimenez. The freshman forward surged his way past two defenders to gain possession and gathered before tucking a hard shot inside the top left corner of the cage.
The Pirates took their 1-0 lead into the half, before Penn pulled even at the 59th minute mark with a goal from Arty Kouzine. Spindler was sharp to keep the Quakers off the board for the rest of the second frame as Penn held a 9-4 edge in shots in the second 45.
Turning Point
After more than a period of scoreless overtime action, Spindler stood tall on a pair of grade-A chances for the Quakers to keep the contest tied. The senior first turned aside a header from Casey Barone in the 103rd minute, then deflected a point-blank blast from Marc Kaizi-Lutu in the 106th. The latter would be the final shot either side could muster as the contest ended with a score of 1-1.
