Pirates Drop Hard-Fought Decision To Marquette
1/10/2017 10:06:00 PM | Women's Basketball
SOUTH ORANGE, N.J. – Down as many as 23 in the second half, the Seton Hall women's basketball team (8-8, 1-4 BIG EAST) rallied to within a single possession late before ultimately falling by a score of 83-77 to Marquette (13-4, 4-2 BIG EAST) on Tuesday night at Walsh Gymnasium. Four Pirates scored in double-figures in the hard-fought back setback, led by a career-high 18 points from Claire Lundberg (Andover, Minn.).
The Pirates trailed by 16 at the break and went down by 23 midway through the third quarter, but closed the third on a 17-2 run and used another 7-0 spurt in the fourth quarter to pull within three with under five minutes to play. That was the closest The Hall would pull, as MU knocked down clutch late 3-pointers and game-sealing free throws down the stretch.
In addition to Lundberg's 18 – which included a 6-for-7 performance from 3-point range, JaQuan Jackson (Killeen, Texas) scored 17 points and grabbed five rebounds while Kaela Hilaire (Floral Park, N.Y.) finished with 16 points and five assists. Lubirdia Gordon (Mount Vernon, N.Y.) was the fourth Pirate in double-figures with 12 points on 6-of-8 shooting. Natasha Hiedeman led MU with 24 points and McKayla Yentz notched 23, both hitting six 3-pointers.
Turning Points
The contest opened with an up-and-down pace, with the two sides playing for over seven minutes before the first media timeout. The Pirates trailed by five after one quarter, but MU reeled off 16-straight to open the second quarter. That big run forced a pair of Seton Hall timeouts and stretched the lead to 35-14 before Gordon ended the spurt with a lay-in. The Pirates cut into the lead before the half, with Jackson beating the halftime buzzer with a 3-pointer to slim the deficit to 46-30 after two quarters.
The Golden Eagles opened the third quarter fast, ballooning their lead to 23 at 62-39 with 4:56 to play in the frame. The Hall answered emphatically, reeling off a 17-2 run to close the quarter capped by a buzzer-beating 3-pointer from Hilaire to cut the lead to 64-56.
MU pushed the advantage back to 10 early in the fourth, but a 7-0 run from the Pirates that included a pair of buckets and an assist for Hilaire got the contest within a single possession at 70-67 with 5:08 to play. The Pirates would be unable to get the score any closer, as Yentz knocked down a pair of trifectas to push the lead back to eight with 2:20 to play. A late Lundberg triple pulled the score within four at 1:19 before the Golden Eagles iced the contest with late free throws.
