Pirates Fall To Creighton In Overtime
1/22/2017 2:40:00 PM | Women's Basketball
SOUTH ORANGE, N.J. – The Seton Hall women's basketball team (9-11, 2-7 BIG EAST) pushed the BIG EAST preseason co-favorite to the brink, falling against Creighton in overtime by a score of 70-60. The Sunday morning contest at Walsh Gym featured 10 lead changes and seven ties in a tight, back-and-forth affair.
The Pirates led by five at the half but were down two with less than two minutes remaining before a pair of clutch baskets from JaQuan Jackson (Killeen, Texas) put The Hall back ahead. Creighton got a game-tying 3-pointer from Lauren Works with 11.8 seconds remaining to send the contest to overtime, where the experienced Bluejays out-scored The Hall 13-3 to stave off the upset.
Jackson led the Pirates with 14 points, while Lubirdia Gordon (Mount Vernon, N.Y.) added 12 and a team-high seven rebounds. For Creighton it was Sydney Lamberty with a game-high 16 and Marissa Janning adding 13 with seven assists and six boards.
Turning Point
Creighton took a 52-50 lead with 4:17 to play on a Brianna Rollerson jumper, and the teams traded stops until a Jackson jumper with 1:46 to go pulled the contest back even at 52-all. After the Pirates got yet another stop they went right back to Jackson for a floater that allowed The Hall to re-take the lead with 1:00 remaining.
The Hall held onto its lead into the final seconds of regulation, making 3-of-4 from the line in the final minute to stay up 57-54 before Works drilled a 3-pointer with 11.8 to play to level the contest. The Hall had a look in the final moments, but a lay-up rimmed out to send the contest to overtime.
