The Hall Knocks Off Xavier On Friday Night
1/27/2017 10:31:00 PM | Women's Basketball
SOUTH ORANGE, N.J. – The Seton Hall women's basketball team (10-11, 3-7 BIG EAST) grabbed a BIG EAST conference victory with a 71-62 triumph over Xavier (10-11, 2-8) on Friday night at Walsh Gymnasium. Kaela Hilaire (Floral Park, N.Y.) paced the Pirates with 16 points and five assists as The Hall led for all but 4:33 in the nine-point win.
The Pirates took a four-point lead after a quarter and led by six at the half, but Xavier battled back and took a one-point lead early in the third quarter. The Hall answered, pushing their lead back to four after three quarters before a 17-12 edge in the fourth quarter to seal the victory.
In support of Hilaire, LaTecia Smith (Gardena, Calif.) also scored in double-figures with 11 points and added a pair of steals. The Hall's center duo of Lubirdia Gordon (Mount Vernon, N.Y.) and Jayla Jones-Pack (Amityville, N.Y.) each grabbed nine rebounds, with Gordon just missing a double-double before fouling out with nine points. For Xavier, Maddison Blackwell led four players in double-figures with 14 points and 10 rebounds.
Head Coach Anthony Bozzella On The Result:
"I'm really proud of the girls tonight, we played hard against a very veteran team in Xavier. We made a couple big plays when we needed to, I thought KK [Hilaire] played one of her best games of the year. If I had to pick a star of the game I really think Jayla [Jones-Pack] started to show the player that we know she can be."
Turning Point
The Hall opened the third quarter cold, allowing Xavier to use a 7-0 run to pull ahead for the first time since the opening minute at 39-38 with 7:01 to play in the frame. Back-to-back buckets for Jones-Pack had The Hall back ahead at 42-40, before XU came back and tied it again on the next possession. In a 44-second span following the tie, Hilaire scored five-straight points to put the Pirates back ahead at 47-42. The Pirates didn't trail the rest of the way following that spurt.
