NEW YORK – Sophomore Tyler Kauth (Wall, N.J.) and freshman Taylor Jackson (Thornton, Colo.) have been named BIG EAST Conference Men's & Women's Swimming & Diving Athletes of the Week, the league office announced Tuesday.
With a time of 21.30, Kauth swam the fastest 50 freestyle time in the BIG EAST this season as the Pirates defeated Monmouth and Montclair State Saturday evening. In the pair of victories, he also picked up a second place finish behind junior teammate Dakota Williams (Noank, Conn.) in the 100 free. Normally a backstroke specialist, Kauth currently holds the top BIG EAST times in the 100 back (51.02) and 200 back (1:50.33), set earlier in the year against Rider on Oct. 7.
In control from the outset on Saturday afternoon, the women's program delivered a 191-91 victory over Montclair State and 188-81 triumph over Monmouth, with Jackson setting the tone in the 1-meter 6 dives. The freshman broke the program record, previously set in 2011 by Brittany Hervey (232.35), with a score of 325.42. The score ranks 12th in the nation and is the best score in the BIG EAST by over 60 points this season.
Furthermore, Jackson's top 3-meter score of 326.55 is the 15th-best in the nation so far in 2017-18.
Up next, both the men's and women's programs head to Morgantown, W.Va. to take on the Mountaineers in addition to BIG EAST foe Xavier on Friday and Saturday, Oct. 27-28.
