NEW YORK – The BIG EAST conference announced the winners of their Institutional Male and Female Scholar-Athlet awards presented by Sunkist on Wednesday (Feb. 22), with men's soccer keeper Julian Spindler (Weiersbach, Germany) and softball outfielder Valerie Suto (Mercerville, N.J.) receiving the prestigious honor for Seton Hall. Both Spindler and Suto will receive scholarships of $2,000 to be applied towards graduate or professional studies.
Spindler is a finance major who holds a 3.98 GPA in the honors program at The Hall. A three-time BIG EAST All-Academic Team member, Spindler was inducted into both Chi Alpha Sigma and Beta Gamma Sigma this year. The former is the National College Athlete Honor Society while the latter is the highest recognition a business student anywhere in the world can receive in an AACSB International-accredited business program.
In addition to his duties as a four-year starting goalkeeper, Spindler has served as the Vice President of ALPFA – The Stillman Business Club since 2014. He has also spent his summers completing internships with Goldman Sachs and Bank of New York Mellon, leading to a full-time appoint with Ernst & Young to begin upon his graduation. He also plans to pursue an MBA upon completion of his undergraduate degree.
Suto holds a 3.83 GPA pursuing a Bachelor of Fine Arts in Graphic Design and Advertising. A three-time BIG EAST Academic All-Star, she was named CoSIDA First Team Academic All-District in 2016. The BIG EAST's stole base leader last season also won Best in Show for Fine Art in Seton Hall's Annual Student Exhibition and nabbed an Honorable Mention for the Annual Art in the Hall contest.
Spindler and Suto are both active in The Hall's many volunteering endeavors, which include America's Grow-a-Row and the annual Thanksgiving Basket drive.
