ATLANTA – Seton Hall women's basketball assistant coach Lauren DeFalco has been named an honoree of the Women's Basketball Coaches Association Thirty Under 30 presented by Marriott Rewards, the WBCA announced on Wednesday (March 29). DeFalco completed her fourth year on the bench for head coach Anthony Bozzella at The Hall in 2016-17 and her second as lead assistant. She is the lone BIG EAST representative on the list and one of three (Alexandria Fuller Simmons, Ole Miss and Jacie Hoyt, Kansas State) from a high-major conference.
Per the WBCA, the Thirty Under 30 program was created to recognize 30 up-and-coming women's basketball coaches age 30 and under at all levels of the game. Each honoree has exemplified their involvement in community service, mentorship and impact on others, professional manner, and attitude and professional association involvement.
"Coach DeFalco brings an unbridled passion to her position every day and serves as a wonderful guide and role model to our student-athletes," Bozzella said. "Her ability to identify talent on the recruiting trail and connect with players during their development is instrumental to the success of our program."
In her role with the Pirates, DeFalco serves as the program's recruiting coordinator and works primarily with point guards and wings. Under her tutelage a total of 10 guards have earned All-Conference honors, most recently with Kaela Hilaire (Floral Park, N.Y.) nabbing a unanimous All-Rookie nod in 2017. On the recruiting trail, All Star Girls Report ranks the Pirates' Class of 2017 No. 1 in the BIG EAST and top-50 nationally.
DeFalco was a key developer of All-American guards Daisha and Ka-Deidre Simmons, who became the program's first All-Americans in 18 years following the 2014-15 campaign. The next season she mentored point guard Shakena Richardson to become The Hall's first ever WNBA draft pick. In four years with DeFalco on staff, The Hall has won 83 games and made three postseason appearances including back-to-back NCAA Tournament berths in 2015 and 2016.
