Seton Hall Adds Four Players for 2017

SOUTH ORANGE, N.J. – Seton Hall head coach Allison Yaeger officially announced on Tuesday the addition of four newcomers who will play women's volleyball at Seton Hall University this fall. Sharay Barnes (Swarthmore, Pa.), Catherine Cruz (San Antonio, Texas), Amanda Rachwal (Bethlehem, Pa.) and Elizabeth Sottung (Westfield, N.J.) will all be eligible to play when the Pirates open the 2017 season at the Oklahoma Invitational on Aug. 25.
A transfer from the University of Kentucky, Barnes will have just one year of eligibility remaining upon her arrival at Seton Hall. A 6-foot-2 ride side hitter, she appeared in 14 matches last season for the Wildcats, recording 20 kills, six blocks and five digs. An All-SEC Academic Team honoree, Barnes was a two-time All-State selection at Strath Haven High School in Wallingford, Pa.
Cruz was a standout defensive player for Winston Churchill High School in San Antonio, and was named to the All-State First Team as a senior. The recipient of the Volleyball Captain Leadership Award as a senior, she was named the team's Most Outstanding Player and notched 741 digs as a senior, which was 13th best in Texas.
A 6-foot-2 middle blocker, Rachwal was a two-time All-State and All-Conference selection for Liberty High School in Bethlehem, Pa. A Gatorade National Player of the Year candidate, she topped more than 1,000 career points and helped lead Liberty to two Steel Division championships and a conference title as a senior. With Rachwal in the middle, Liberty totaled a 41-4 combined record over the last two years.
Providing the Pirates with more depth at defensive specialist and libero, Sottung collected at least 200 digs in each of the last two seasons for Westfield High School. Named to the All-State Third Team, she has guided Westfield to four straight first place finishes in the conference.
The Seton Hall women's volleyball team will open its 2017 season on Friday, August 25 as part of the Oklahoma Invitational in Norman, Okla. The Pirates will face the host Sooners in the opener at 8:00 p.m. ET. The following day they will play both Colorado at 11:00 a.m. and Northwestern State at 5:30 p.m.
