Seton Hall is playing its travel partner, St. John's, this weekend, which means it will only have one BIG EAST match. The Pirates will host the Red Storm on Friday at 8:00 p.m. It's Senior Night, so immediately following the match, The Hall will honor its five graduating seniors.
Â
LAST WEEKEND
Last weekend, the Pirates split a pair of BIG EAST Conference matches at Walsh Gym. The Hall defeated Providence in four sets on Friday, before falling in three sets to No. 9 Creighton on Saturday.
Â
Senior Abby Thelen (Ft. Mitchell, Ky.) had a match-high 20 kills to lead the Pirates to a four-set victory over Providence, 3-1 (25-18, 21-25, 25-18, 26-24), on Friday at Walsh Gym. Thelen was brilliant, recording 20 kills, and only three attack errors, for an impressive .459 attack percentage. Showing her defensive mettle today, she also recorded a season-high five blocks.
Â
On Saturday, Thelen again led the Pirates with a team-high 13 kills, and Sophia Coffey (Sierra Madre, Calif.) nearly had a double-double, but The Hall fell to No. 9 Creighton, 3-0 (16-25, 19-25, 13-25). Thelen had 13 kills to go with six digs and a .206 attack percentage in another strong all-around effort. Coffey finished with a team-high 22 assists and eight digs.
Â
SCOUTING ST. JOHN'S
Seton Hall and St. John's will meet for the second time this season and 31st time in history on Friday. The Pirates own a 17-13 all-time series lead, but the Red Storm swept The Hall earlier this year in Queens.
Â
Senior Caitlin Koska (Franklin, Wis.) had six kills and a team-high 13 digs, but the Pirates fell at St. John's, 3-0 (15-25, 23-25, 17-25), on Sept. 29. Koska finished tied with Thelen for the team lead with six kills. Coffey had 11 assists, six digs and a team-best three service aces.
Â
St. John's enters the weekend with an impressive 21-9 overall record and a 10-5 mark in BIG EAST Conference play. They are 6-4 on the road this season. The Red Storm are one of the hottest teams in the BIG EAST having won five of their last six matches, with their lone set back coming at the hands of No. 9 Creighton. Last weekend, they split a pair of matches, falling in straight sets to the Bluejays on Friday, before defeating Providence in four sets on Saturday.Â
Â
St. John's can clinch the third seed of the 2018 BIG EAST Championship with a win over the Pirates on Friday.
