NEW YORK – Following a breakout opening night performance, Seton Hall men's soccer freshman CJ Tibbling (Hagatan, Sweden) has been named BIG EAST Freshman of the Week. The conference announced the award for Tibbling on Monday (Aug. 27) afternoon.
Tibbling made his collegiate debut in The Hall's season opener on Friday night at Army West Point and made the most of it with a two-goal performance. He got the scoring started for The Hall with a penalty kick conversion in the 17th minute, then sealed the double overtime victory with a running header for a 105th minute golden goal. Tibbling led all players with five shots on the night, including four on goal.
NEW BRITAIN, Conn. - The Hall is back in action on Tuesday, Aug. 28 for a 7 p.m. kick-off at Central Connecticut. The contest will be available streaming on NEC Front Row. See below for four things to know ahead of the midweek non-conference tilt.
1| Lindberg gets a historic W in his debut
Seton Hall's first-year head coach Andreas Lindberg became the fifth coach in Seton Hall history to pick up a victory in his first match on the sideline. It was also only Seton Hall's third win in 28 all-time matches against Army, a series dating back to the 1940s.
2| The freshman impressed
In addition to Tibbling's opening night brace, fellow rookie Martin Storesund (Snaroya, Norway) notched an assist with a heads up play on the game-winning goal. Storesund and Tibbling both found their ways into Lindberg's first Starting XI of the year in their respective debuts and freshman Elias Nichols (Bristol, England) saw action as a reserve.
3 | It's been a while…
The Pirates have not faced Central Connecticut since the 1986 season. That meeting on Sept. 10 resulted in a 4-1 victory for The Hall, which then went on to win its first of three-straight BIG EAST titles.
4 | Not a lot of shots
The Pirate defense held Army West Point to only four shots on goal in Friday night's match, with the only goal scored by the opposition coming off a free kick. Andreas Nota (Rome, Italy) made three saves in his Seton Hall debut and was supported by a staunch defensive effort from the back line of Nico Andersen (Odense, Denmark), David Arvidsson (Gothenburg, Sweden), Love Fredriksson (Angelholm, Sweden), Nick Najera (Laguna Hills, Calif.) and Nathan Tremonti (Bloomfield Hills, Mich.).
