SOUTH ORANGE, N.J. – The Seton Hall men's soccer team (2-1-1) battled Hofstra (0-3-2) to a scoreless draw in its home opener on Thursday night at Owen T. Carroll Field. On a night that fluctuated between temperatures in the 90s and driving rains, the Pirates mustered 14 shots but could not put home a goal in the double overtime tie.
Andreas Nota (Rome, Italy) made five saves for the Pirates to record his first clean sheet in Blue and White. The draw was both the first shutout for the Pirates this season and their first match being held without a goal, despite several quality looks.
Turning Point
After a sluggish first half, the Pirates came out buzzing in the second frame and nearly put home the game-winner. In the 51st minute, Nico Andersen (Odense, Denmark) made a ferocious run up the right flank and fed in a picture-perfect cross to CJ Tibbling (Järna, Sweden) for a hard blast that zipped just wide of the far post. In the 57th minute Tibbling had another chance with a header off of a corner kick that was blocked, before Carlton McKenzie (Birmingham, England) had an attempt saved off the ensuing corner. The Pirates totaled six shots in the first 12 minutes of the second half but were unable to put one away.
News, Notes and Numbers
The Pirates have a full week before diving into BIG EAST play with a local derby at St. John's on Saturday, Sept. 15.
