
Samuels Named BIG EAST, MBWA Player of the Week

NEW YORK - After posting a pair of double-doubles and leading The Hall to a 2-0 week, women's basketball standout Shadeen Samuels (Ossining, N.Y.) has been named BIG EAST Player of the Week. The conference announced the weekly accolade on Monday. In addition, Samuels picked up a Met Basketball Writers Player of the Week nod on Tuesday morning.Â

The conference honor for Samuels marks the fourth time this season she has received a conference award, but the first time in the junior's career that she has earned a Player of the Week certificate.It is also the first MBWA honor for Samuels. In wins over Creighton and Providence at Walsh this weekend, Samuels posted gaudy numbers to average 25.5 points, 10.5 rebounds and 4.0 assists per game. The 6'0 forward also added two blocks and two steals while shooting 54.1 percent from the floor.

Samuels got the weekend started with a career day against Creighton on Jan. 11, posting a career-high 32 points along with 11 rebounds and three assists. She also showed her range with a career-high four made 3-pointers. She followed that up with her third-straight double-double in a win over Providence on Jan. 13, going for 19 points with 10 rebounds and five assists.

Overall this season Samuels has proven to be one of the most improved players in the BIG EAST and elevated herself to the league's upper echelon. She currently ranks top-five in the conference in scoring (17.1 ppg), rebounding (9.4 rpg) and field goal percentage (53.3 percent).Â

The Pirates are back in action on Friday, Jan. 18 at Marquette for a 12:30 p.m. (ET) tip.
