CINCINNATI, OHIO – The Seton Hall women's basketball team (9-5, 1-2 BIG EAST) dropped an absolute heartbreaker in overtime, falling at Xavier by a score of 63-62 on Sunday afternoon at the Cintas Center. The Hall did not take its first lead of the day until 3.8 seconds left in overtime, but saw Xavier hit a game-winning shot on the ensuing possession.
Shadeen Samuels (Ossining, N.Y.) led the way for the Pirates with 24 points and 10 rebounds, including a pair of free throws that put The Hall ahead with 3.8 ticks to go. Nicole Jimenez (Miami, Fla.) joined her in double-figures with 16 points while Selena Philoxy (Queens, N.Y.) had a career day on the glass with a total of 21 rebounds.
How it Happened
The Hall fell behind as many as 12 early in the first half and went to the break down 31-25. The Pirates would then out-score the Musketeers by two in the third quarter, setting up their late charge to force overtime. Down 58-55 with 1:11 to go, Kaela Hilaire (Queens, N.Y.) found Kaity Healy (Freehold, N.J.) for an elbow 3-pointer that evened the score for the first time since the opening tip. It was Healy's lone made field goal of the day.
The Pirates would get a stop on the next possession, but couldn't get a shot off their final trip after Xavier used a pair of fouls to give. In overtime both defenses ramped up, and The Hall went into the final second of regulation down 61-60. With 6.8 seconds to play The Hall called for time and drew up a look for Samuels inside, who drew contact and sunk two free throws with 3.8 to play to give SHU a 62-61 advantage.
After a Xavier timeout, Na'Teshia Owens worked her way into the lane and threw up a runner that connected to give the Musketeers a 63-62 lead with 1.0 on the clock. Owens missed the and-one free throw but it was all XU needed for the win.

The Pirates return home to Walsh Gym on Friday, Jan. 11 when they play host to Creighton. Tip-off is set for 11 a.m. on Kids Day presented by American Dairy.
