QUEENS, N.Y. – Senior Haylee Gasser (Mission Viejo, Calif.) and freshman Julia Wilkins (Mason, Ohio) combined to record 16 kills and only three attack errors, but the Seton Hall women's volleyball team fell in straight sets at St. John's, 3-0 (18-25, 14-25, 17-25), on Friday.
Â
Gasser had a team-high nine kills, only three attack errors, four digs and three blocks in a solid all-around contest. Wilkins finished with seven kills, no attack errors and a team-best .438 attack percentage.
Â
SET 1:
Seton Hall roared out of the gates in the opening set, scoring six of the first seven points, and forcing the Red Storm to take an early timeout. Out of the break however, St. John's responded with a 7-3 run to cut The Hall's lead to one, 9-8. The Pirates jumped back ahead, and back-to-back block assists by Wilkins and Amanda Rachwal (Bethlehem, Pa.) put them on top, 12-8. St. John's answered again with a 6-1 to take a 14-13 lead, and never trailed again. With the score tied at 15, the Red Storm scored five straight to assume control. They went on to win set one, 25-18.
Â
SET 2:
The start of set two was very different than set one. This time, St. John's burst out with a 10-1 run, and the Pirates were forced to play catch-up for the remainder of the set. On three occasions, Seton Hall was able to cut their deficit to as few as six points, but alas could not draw closer in route to a 25-14 set two loss.
Â
SET 3:
The early goings of the third set was the closest of the match with the teams tying six times before either team scored their 15th point. A kill by Gasser tied the set at 12 for the Pirates, but St. John's responded with an 8-1 run to take a 20-13 advantage. The Hall went on to drop the final set, 25-17.
Â
Inside the Numbers:
Seton Hall will return to action on Sunday, Nov. 17 when it hosts St. John's at Walsh Gymnasium. Match time is scheduled for 1:00 p.m. ET. It will be Senior Day and the Pirates' graduating seniors will be celebrated following the match.
