SOUTH ORANGE, N.J. – Highlighted by a marquee home match-up with UConn and a slew of challenging road tests, head coach Anthony Bozzella and the Seton Hall women's basketball team have announced the 2019-20 non-conference schedule. The Pirates can face up to three NCAA Tournament teams and five opponents that reached the postseason among their 11 non-league contests.
"This is one of the toughest schedules we have faced in our time at Seton Hall and I think it will be a great test for the type of team we have," Bozzella said. "We have high expectations for this group and playing such high-quality opponents early and often in the non-league will give us an excellent gauge heading into the BIG EAST slate."
Season tickets are on-sale now for only $50, available by calling the ticket office at 973-275-4255. Season tickets are the ONLY way to secure your seat for every game at Walsh Gym, including the UConn match-up on Dec. 5.
The Hall opens the season with a pair of regional foes coming to South Orange, hosting Sacred Heart on Nov. 6 and Fairfield on Nov. 9. The Pioneers made a WNIT appearance in 2018-19 after going 14-4 in NEC play, while the Stags are a perennial top team in the MAAC.
On Nov. 12, the Pirates will welcome VCU to Walsh Gym. The Rams went 24-10 last season and claimed a share of the A-10 regular season title before advancing to the second round of the WNIT. Three days later The Hall hosts another defending league champion when local rival and NCAA Tournament stalwart Princeton visits Walsh Gym on Friday, Nov. 15.
The Pirates begin a stretch of 20 days away from Walsh Gym on Sunday, Nov. 17 when they battle A-10 foe Saint Joseph's in a neutral site game hosted by Fordham. SHU's first true road test comes on Nov. 22 at Lehigh, where they will face a Mountain Hawks squad coming off a 21-win campaign. The Pirates then head international for two games against top-level competition in Bimini, Bahamas at the Junkanoo. As previously announced, The Hall will face Georgia Tech on Thursday, Nov. 28 and either Vanderbilt or Rutgers on Nov. 29 or 30.
The keynote of the non-league schedule hits Walsh Gym on Dec. 5 when the University of Connecticut visits South Orange. The 11-time national champions are coming off their 12th-straight Final Four appearance in 2018-19 and will be making their first trip to The Hall since 2012-13. The Huskies will be re-joining the BIG EAST for the 2020-21 campaign.
The Hall closes the non-conference schedule with two more regional contests. First is a trip to Iona on Sunday, Dec. 8 in a homecoming game of sorts. Bozzella was the head coach of the Gaels for 11 seasons and assistant coaches Lauren DeFalco and Marissa Flagg are both Iona alums. The Pirates then conclude their non-league slate on Friday, Dec. 20 with a home matinee against Lafayette.
The Pirates return several key pieces from last year's WNIT squad, none more prominent than reigning BIG EAST scoring champion and First Team All-Conference pick Shadeen Samuels (Ossining, N.Y.). Also among The Hall's returners are Selena Philoxy (Queens, N.Y.), who ranked third in the BIG EAST in rebounding during league play last year, and double-digit scorer Desiree Elmore (Hartford, Conn.). Impact transfers Barbara Johnson (Toronto, Ontario) and Alexis Lewis (Pittston, Pa.) figure to be major scoring threats after sitting out last season and will supplement a talented crop of newcomers.
