MILWAUKEE, WIS. – Senior Barbara Johnson (Toronto, Ontario) had a team-high 20 points, and the Pirates cut a 20-point deficit to only seven late, but the Seton Hall women's basketball team fell at Marquette, 81-60, in Milwaukee on Sunday.
Â
Johnson scored 20 points on 8-for-17 shooting. She also grabbed six rebounds and tied her career-high with four steals.Â
Â
Desiree Elmore (Hartford, Conn.) and Mya Jackson (Wilmington, Ohio) also reached double-figures in scoring. Elmore had 12 points, five rebounds and three assists before fouling out late. Jackson finished with 10 points and three rebounds.
Â
The Story:
With Johnson leading the way, Seton Hall used a 7-0 run to close the first quarter with a 24-19 lead. Johnson scored 13 of The Hall's 24 points and the Pirates as a whole shot 52.9% from the floor to open the game strong offensively.
Â
Marquette opened the second quarter with six straight points to reclaim a 25-24 advantage with 8:27 left before halftime. With the game tied at 34 and under two minutes left in the first half, the Golden Eagles got a pair of made free-throws by Selena Lott and a made jumper by Camryn Taylor to send the Pirates into the locker room down, 38-34. The Hall out-shot and out-rebounded the Golden Eagles in the first half, but committed 13 turnovers, compared to just seven for Marquette.
Â
The Golden Eagles opened the third quarter with 20 of the first 24 points to take a commanding 58-38 lead with 3:50 left in the period. In all, going back to the end of the second quarter, Marquette had a 24-4 run over 8:37 to assume control. The Hall was just 1-for-13 from the floor during that span, while the Golden Eagles were 9-for-15.
Â
A 10-1 Seton Hall run, capped by a pair of free-throws by Shadeen Samuels (Ossining, N.Y.), cut Marquette's lead to only nine points, 60-51, with 9:42 left in the contest. That lead dipped to seven points on a mid-range jumper by Johnson with 5:18 to go. However, The Hall couldn't get closer.
