Pirates Host St. John's for FOX All-Access Game, Sunday

Seton Hall will return to action on Sunday, January 26 for a BIG EAST contest with local rival St. John's in Walsh Gymnasium. Â Tip time is scheduled for 6:30 p.m. ET.Â

MEDIA
Sunday's FS1 broadcast will be part of a FOX College Hoops All-Access double-header. During the game, each head coach will wear a live microphone, giving viewers the chance to hear directly from the sidelines and locker rooms from tipoff through the final whistle with. Commercial-free presentations allow FOX Sports cameras and microphones to capture behind-the-scenes conversations not typically available to a television audience, including instant access to team huddles and locker rooms. Lisa Byington and Kim Adams on the call.Â

As usual, the game will also be available over the airwaves at 89.5 FM WSOU and at wsou.net. Wilnir Louis and Liam Plate will describe the action on the radio.  We'll also have the obligatory live stats available as well.

PROMOTION
Sunday's game will be a "BLUE OUT" - all fans are encouraged to wear blue to the game. It is also Seton Hall's Student Appreciation Game - all students who attend are welcome to free pizza!! Finally, there will be a Half-Court Shot for $10,000 at halftime!!

LAST GAME
Seniors Shadeen Samuels (Ossining, N.Y.) and Alexis Lewis (Wilkes-Barre, Pa.) both reached the 20-point mark and the Pirates downed Providence, 97-55, behind a remarkable 46-7 start on Sunday.

For a second straight game, the Pirates came out of the starting gate on fire from the field, outscoring the Friars, 22-5, in the opening quarter before eventually taking a 46-7 lead with 4:42 left in the second quarter.

Samuels had a game-high 23 points on an efficient 9-for-11 shooting from the field to go with six rebounds and two assists in under 20 minutes. Lewis tallied 20 points on the strength of 5-for-9 shooting from three-point range. She also had five rebounds two assists and two steals.

Providence scored first, but the Pirates followed with a 22-3 run which last through the end of the first quarter. In the second quarter, the burst extended to a remarkable 46-5 run, which included a 19-0 spurt mid-way through the period.

LAST TIME AGAINST ST. JOHN'S
The eight-seed Pirates dropped its postseason opener on March 9 last year, falling to nine-seed St. John's by a score of 76-51 at Wintrust Arena. The contest was a first-round match-up at the BIG EAST Women's Basketball Tournament presented by Jeep.

Selena Philoxy led the Pirates with 14 points, tying her career-high also set in conference tournament play a season ago. She was one of three in double-figures for The Hall along with Shadeen Samuels and Inja Butina. Samuels also grabbed a team-high 10 rebounds to notch a double-double.

After a back-and-forth first half, the Red Storm got hot from 3-point range late in the second quarter and took a 38-34 lead to the half. A 3-pointer from Nicole Jimenez got the deficit back down to four at 45-41 midway through the third quarter, but SJU answered with a 14-2 run to close the period and took a 59-43 lead after three frames.

SCOUTING ST. JOHN'S
St. John's is coming off a 15-16 season last year, which included a 7-11 mark in BIG EAST play. Their season came to an end in the second round of the BIG EAST Championship in an 88-57 loss to Marquette.

This year, St. John's has identical records with Seton Hall, a 12-7 mark overall and 5-3 record in conference play. Furthermore, the Pirates and Red Storm have beaten and lost to the same teams in BIG EAST play. Like The Hall, St. John's swept its games last weekend against Providence and Creighton. The Pirates however, won those games by an average of 27.0 points, while the Red Storm's margin of victory was 5.5 points in those games.

St. John's is led by Qadashah Hoppie, who is averaging 17.2 points per game, which ranks fifth in the BIG EAST.Â

Seton Hall will return to action on Friday, January 31 when it travels to Washington, D.C. for a BIG EAST contest at Georgetown. Tip-time is scheduled for 7:00 p.m. ET. The contest will be televised nationally on FS2. As usual, 89.FM WSOU will also bring you all the action on the radio.
