
Pirates Fall to Hot-Shooting St. John's, 82-66

SOUTH ORANGE, N.J. – Seniors Shadeen Samuels (Ossining, N.Y.) and Alexis Lewis (Wilkes-Barre, Pa.) both had double-doubles, but the Seton Hall women's basketball team fell to St. John's, 82-66, in Walsh Gymnasium on Sunday.

St. John's shot 62.0% from the field for the game, including a 72.7% clip in a game-defining third quarter that saw its lead grow to as many as 24 points.

Samuels finished with game-highs of 24 points and 12 rebounds, including nine offensive rebounds. She also had three blocks and two steals. Lewis tallied 16 points and a season-high 10 rebounds.

The Story:
After a two-point back-and-forth first quarter, St. John's made the first significant run early in the second. The Red Storm opened the frame with a 12-4 run to take a 27-18 lead with 6:22 to go before the break. St. John's lead grew to as many as 12 points before eventually taking a 10-point advantage into the locker room.

St. John's opened the second half with a 9-0 run, holding the Pirates scoreless for the first 3:23 of the third period. Samuels scored on a fast break to cut the Pirates' deficit to 15 points, 49-34, but the Red Storm responded with another 9-0 burst to grab its largest lead of the game, 58-34 with 3:46 left in the third quarter.

Trailing by 22 entering the fourth quarter, the resilient Pirates went on an incredible 16-0 run, and a three-pointer by Lewis cut The Hall's deficit to only six points, 63-57, with 6:57 left in the game. Two minutes later, with the Pirates trailing by only seven, St. John's Alissa Alston hit a three-pointer from the St. John's coaching box to beat an expiring shot clock. From there, the Hall couldn't get closer than nine points.

Seton Hall will return to action on Friday, January 31 when it travels to Washington, D.C. for BIG EAST contest against Georgetown. The game will be televised nationally on FS2, and of course will be provided on the radio by 89.5 FM WSOU and wsou.net. Tip-time is scheduled for 7:00 p.m. ET.

- Seton Hall was 26-for-66 (39.4%) from the floor for the game, while St. John's was 31-for-50 (62.0%). The Hall was 6-for-29 (20.7%) from three-point range, while the Red Storm were 9-for-19 (47.4%).Â
- Samuels finished with a game-high 24 points on an efficient 10-for-14 shooting. She also had a game-best 12 rebounds to go with three blocks and two assists.
- The Hall out-rebounded St. John's, 34-to-28, which included a massive 19-to-4 advantage on the offensive glass and an 18-to-4 lead in second-chance points.
- Lewis had 16 points to go with a season-high 10 rebounds
- Seton Hall was 8-for-13 (61.5%) from the free-throw line, while St. John's was 11-for-13 (84.6%).
- Freshman Lauren Park-Lane (Wilmington, Del.) had seven points and a career-high eight assists with only one turnover.
- Seton Hall forced 13 turnovers, while St. John's forced 14.
- Seton Hall drops to 12-8 overall and 5-4 in the BIG EAST, while St. John's improves to 13-7 overall and 6-3 in conference play.
- The Pirates are now 33-47 all-time against the Red Storm.
- Lewis reached double-figures in scoring tonight for the 13th time this season, which is second-most on the team. Her double-double was her first in a Pirate uniform.
- Samuels scored in double-figures for the 11th time this season and the 45th time of her career, most among Seton Hall active players.
- Samuels topped 20 points for the second time this season and the 14th time in her career. Her double-double is her third of the season and the 13th of her career.
- Park-Lane has now had six games this season of at least five assists and less than two turnovers.
- With both Samuels and Lewis recording double-doubles, it's the first time since Nov. 26, 2016 that Seton Hall has had two Pirates record a double-double in the same game.
- Tonight's game was a FOX All-Access broadcast, the third time the Pirates have participated in the exclusive showcase.
