Sophomore Lauren Park-Lane (Wilmington, Del.) erupted for a career-high 29 points, but the Pirates fell to No. 3 Connecticut, 92-65, in its BIG EAST Conference opener in Walsh Gym on Tuesday.
Â
The Pirates, playing in their fourth game in eight days, trailed by only eight points at the half, but a lengthy third-quarter Connecticut run put the contest out of reach. Park-Lane was spectacular, tallying a game-high 29 points on 9-for-20 shooting and 9-for-10 from free-throw line. The point guard also dished out a team-high six assists against only two turnovers.
Â
A jumper by Desiree Elmore (Harford, Conn.) 1:10 into the third quarter cut UConn's lead to just six points, but the Huskies responded with a deafening 21-4 burst to give them a commanding 61-38 lead with 3:20 left in the third. UConn's Paige Bueckers and Olivia Nelson-Ododa combined for 26 points in the quarter alone. As a team, the Huskies shot 87.5% (14-for-16) as they pulled away in the third.

LAST TIME AGAINST MARQUETTE
Alexis Lewis poured in a career-high 28 points and teammate Shadeen Samuels filled the box score as the Pirates downed Marquette, 72-60, on Feb. 7 in Walsh Gym to split the season series.
Â
Lewis had her best game in a Pirate uniform, scoring her 28 points on an efficient 11-for-15 shooting from the floor, including 6-for-7 from three-point range. She also had eight rebounds and three steals. Samuels had 17 points shared the team lead with eight rebounds, six assists and three steals in a strong all-around effort.
Â
Leading 14-12, Seton Hall closed out the first quarter with an 8-2 run to grab a 22-14 advantage after one. Lewis had 11 points and was 3-for-3 with three steals in the opening quarter alone. The Pirates kept their offense going in the second quarter, using an 11-2 run, capped by a steal and breakaway layup by Samuels, to take a commanding 35-18 lead with 4:07 to go before halftime.

SCOUTING MARQUETTE
Marquette is coming off a strong season that ended with a 24-8 overall record and a 13-5 mark in conference play. The Golden Eagles made it to the BIG EAST final before falling to top-seeded DePaul, 88-74. An NCAA Tournament berth was all but inevitable, but the season was halted due to COVID-19.
Â
This season, Marquette remains one of the top teams in the conference, picked to finish third in the 11-team BIG EAST. Among those returning is Preseason All-BIG EAST selection Selena Lott, who averaged 15.5 points and 5.6 assists per game last year.
Â
Marquette was one of few teams that hasn't been adversely affected yet by COVID-19, having played six games already. They won four of five non-conference games with their lone setback a nine-point loss to nearby Milwaukee on Dec. 2. They're coming off a 66-62 victory over St. John's on Wednesday. Selena Lott scored a team-best 21 points.
UP NEXT
