
Lewis, Samuels Fuel Pirates Past Marquette, 72-60

SOUTH ORANGE, N.J. – Senior Alexis Lewis (Wilkes-Barre, Pa.) poured in a career-high 28 points and teammate Shadeen Samuels (Ossining, N.Y.) filled the box score as the Seton Hall women's basketball team downed Marquette, 72-60, at Walsh Gym on Friday.
The victory is the Pirates' fifth in their last six games and moves them to 8-4 in BIG EAST play.

Lewis had her best game in a Pirate uniform, scoring her 28 points on an efficient 11-for-15 shooting from the floor, including 6-for-7 from three-point range. She also had eight rebounds and three steals.Â

Samuels had 17 points shared the team lead with eight rebounds, six assists and three steals in a strong all-around effort.

The Story:
Leading 14-12, Seton Hall closed out the first quarter with an 8-2 run to grab a 22-14 advantage after one. Lewis had 11 points and was 3-for-3 with three steals in the opening quarter alone. The Pirates kept their offense going in the second quarter, using an 11-2 run, capped by a steal and breakaway layup by Samuels, to take a commanding 35-18 lead with 4:07 to go before halftime.

The Pirates took a 15-point advantage, 40-25, into the locker room. The Hall shot 53.3% from the field in the first half and limited the Golden Eagles to just 34.8% shooting and 12 turnovers.

A three-pointer by Lewis with 7:40 left in the third quarter gave The Hall its largest lead of the game, 45-27, but from there the Golden Eagles methodically chipped away at their deficit. A 14-4 Marquette run cut The Hall's lead to eight points, 49-41 with 2:30 left in the third quarter. The Pirates ultimately took a 10-point lead into the final period.

In the fourth quarter, the Golden Eagles twice cut their deficit to eight points, but couldn't get closer. In fact, The Hall's lead ballooned back up to 17 points on two occasions, including when Lewis drilled her sixth and final three-pointer of the night with 3:32 remaining in the game.

Seton Hall will return to action on Sunday, February 9 when it hosts No. 14 DePaul in Walsh Gym. The game will be streamed live on the BIG EAST Digital Network, and of course will be provided on the radio by 89.5 FM WSOU and wsou.net. Tip-time is scheduled for 1:00 p.m. ET.

- Seton Hall improves to 15-8 overall and 8-4 in the BIG EAST, while Marquette falls to 17-6 overall and 8-4 in conference play.
- The Pirates have now won eight BIG EAST games, which is their most since the 2015-16 season.
