Behind 20 points from both sophomores Mya Jackson (Wilmington, Ohio) and Lauren Park-Lane (Wilmington, Del.) the Pirates rallied from a 12-point deficit to earn its first BIG EAST victory of the season, 77-71, at Providence on Sunday.
Â
The Pirates trailed by as many as nine points in the third quarter until a dramatic 14-0 run gave them the lead for good and changed their fates. Jackson scored 20 points on an efficient 7-for-11 shooting from the floor, including 5-for-6 from three-point range. Park-Lane had 20 points and was 8-for-11 from the free-throw line. She also dished out five assists.
Â
Senior Desiree Elmore (Hartford, Conn.) had a strong all-around game despite dealing with foul trouble. The forward finished with 14 points to go with a game-high 11 rebounds and five assists.

LAST TIME AGAINST VILLANOVA
Shadeen Samuels grabbed a rebound off a missed free-throw and scored with two seconds left to give the Pirates an improbable 65-63 victory on Feb. 2 of last year and earn them a split of the season series.
Â
Mya Jackson was fouled, down a point, with only four seconds left and calmly made her first shot to tie the score at 63. She missed her second shot, but Samuels was able to pull down the rebound and score off the glass for the game-winner.
Â
The never-say-die Pirates trailed by nine entering the fourth quarter, but opened the final frame with an 11-1 burst to get back into the game. Samuels finished with a team-high 25 points, including nine in the fourth quarter, on 10-for-13 shooting. She also pulled down seven rebounds.
Â
SCOUTING VILLANOVA
The Wildcats are coming off a successful 18-13season overall and an 11-7 mark in BIG EAST play. Villanova closed the regular season with wins in four of their last five games and defeated Xavier in overtime in the quarterfinals of the 2020 BIG EAST Championship. The Wildcats' season ended in the semifinals with a 72-59 loss to Marquette.
Â
This year, Villanova is predicted to finish seventh in the 11-team BIG EAST Conference, according to the Preseason Coaches' Poll, one spot behind the Pirates. Sophomore Maddy Siegrist was named to the Preseason All-BIG EAST Team.
To date, Villanova is off to a fast start in 2020-21 with wins in seven of its first nine games, including a 2-2 mark in BIG EAST play. They're coming off a 94-82 loss at DePaul on Monday, a game that was added only two day earlier. Siegrist erupted for 31 points, nine rebounds, five assists and four blocks in the loss.
