LAST WEEK
Seton Hall split a pair of BIG EAST matches at Walsh Gymnasium last weekend. The Hall swept Xavier on Friday, but got swept by Butler on Saturday. They're now 11-13 overall and 3-7 in conference play.
Â
Senior Emilee Turner (Kaysville, Utah) and sophomore Perri Lucas (Chicago, Ill.) combined for 19 kills and only two attack errors as the Pirates team swept Xavier, 3-0 (25-21, 25-11, 25-13), on Friday. The victory was particularly satisfying for The Hall given their five-set loss to Xavier in Cincinnati just two weeks ago, with all three of their set losses coming by two points.
Â
Turner finished with a team-best 10 kills, with only one attack error, a team-best .600 attack percentage and four blocks. Lucas had nine kills, only one attack error and a .400 attack percentage.
On Saturday, sophomore Tsvetelina Ilieva (Sofia, Bulgaria) had a team-high 10 kills, but The Hall fell to Butler, 3-0 (23-25, 20-25, 23-25). Ilieva was good and efficient on Saturday, recording 10 kills and only two attack errors. She also had two digs and two blocks. Junior Raygan Murray (Rocky River, Ohio) had a match-high 16 digs to go with two assists.
Â
For her efforts, Murray was named to the BIG EAST Weekly Honor Roll on Monday.
Â
SCOUTING VILLANOVA
Villanova owns a 31-17 all-time series lead over Seton Hall. During the COVID-19-shortened spring 2021 season, the teams split a pair of five-set matches in Pennsylvania. The Hall's victory on March 20 snapped a six-match losing streak to the Wildcats.
Â
Villanova is coming off a 4-6 season during the abbreviated 2021 spring. They went 3-5 in the BIG EAST East Division and didn't qualify for the BIG EAST Tournament. Two years ago, in their last full season, the Wildcats went 22-9 overall and 13-5 in the BIG EAST, which included a pair of victories over Seton Hall.
Â
This season, the Wildcats were picked to finish in fifth place in the 11-team BIG EAST Conference, according to the Preseason Coaches' Poll. Graduate student Averi Salvador was named to the Preseason All-BIG EAST Team.Â
Â
Villanova enters the weekend with a 12-10 record overall and a 4-6 mark in conference play. They're coming off a rough weekend in which they were swept both at Providence on Friday and at Creighton on Sunday. Nova's four BIG EAST victories have come against Xavier, Georgetown and twice against Butler.
Â
SCOUTING GEORGETOWN
Georgetown holds a 23-20 all-time series lead over Seton Hall, but the Pirates have won 17 of the last 22 meetings and seven of the last eight. The teams didn't play during the COVID-19-shortened 2021 spring because the Hoyas elected not to compete.Â
Â
As mentioned above, Georgetown didn't compete during the spring and are coming off a 13-19 overall record in 2019. They were 3-15 in the BIG EAST, which included a pair of losses to Seton Hall.
Â
This season, the Hoyas were picked to finish last in the 11-team BIG EAST Conference, according to the Preseason Coaches' Poll. Georgetown enters the weekend having lost four straight matches with a 5-16 record overall and a 1-9 mark in conference play. Last weekend, the Hoyas were swept on the road by both Creighton and Providence. Their lone BIG EAST victory of the year came against Connecticut on Oct. 9 in four sets.
Â
UP NEXT
Next weekend, the Pirates will return home for a pair of BIG EAST contests. The Hall will host Marquette on Free French Fry Friday on Nov. 5, and then face DePaul on Saturday, Nov. 6. Both contests will begin at 6:00 p.m. and will be streamed by the Pirate Sports Network for subscribers on FloSports.
