3/8/2021 7:12:00 PM | Men's Golf
PINEHURST, N.C. – Senior Andres Acevedo (San Antonio, Texas) fired a 1-under-par, 71, in the opening round of the 2021 Ross Collegiate Classic and has the Seton Hall men's golf team tied for third place in after 18 holes at Mid Pines Golf Club.
Â
Acevedo was brilliant to finish his round, collecting four birdies on the back nine to pick up his first sub-par round in tournament play this season. After one round, he is tied with UNC-Greensboro's Tommy Lamb for the individual lead.
Â
Collectively, the Pirates are tied with Elon for third place after round one following a 10-over-par, 298. Ohio University is the team leader, just three strokes ahead of The Hall, after a 295.
Â
Graduate student Alex McAuley (Douglas, Isle of Man) also had a strong opening performance, shooting a 1-over-par, 73. McAuley had three birdies through his first seven holes to pace his round.Â
Â
Deven Ramachandran (San Rafael, Calif.) only had one birdie in his opening round, but he saved it for his final hole of the day. The Pirate junior shot a 4-over-par, 76. Two strokes behind Ramachandran is the Pirate freshman Brody Hanley (Lantana, Texas). Hanley carded a 6-over-par, 78, on Monday.
Â
Rounding out the Pirate lineup, senior Gregor Tait (Martlesham Heath, England) shot a 7-over-par, 79.
Â
Three additional Pirates also made the trip and are competing as individuals. Freshman Alex Sun (Danville, Calif.) shot a 4-over-par, 76, while junior Peter Tyler Po (Nasipit Cebu City, Philippines) had a 5-over-par, 77. Sophomore James Bosworth (Simsbury, Conn.) finished his opening round with an 11-over-par, 83.
Â
The field was originally scheduled to play 36 holes today, but play was suspended due to darkness after most golfers having played half of their second round. The teams will pick up the suspended second round tomorrow before completing round three.Â

ROSS COLLEGIATE CLASSIC
Host:Â George Mason University
Location:Â Pinehurst, N.C.
Course:Â Mid Pines Golf Club
Course Vitals:Â Par-72, 6,633 yards
Dates:Â March 8-9, 2021
THE COURSE:
A rarity among Donald Ross masterpieces, Mid Pines Golf Course remains exactly as the world renowned architect built it in 1921 and impeccably restored by Kyle Franz in 2013. The renovation was honored with GOLF Magazine's Best U.S. Resort Renovation and Restoration of the Year. The course, often characterized as "pure Donald Ross," was designed to fit perfectly into the natural landscape, as was Ross's signature approach.
Â
Mid Pines was not intended to be a daunting challenge for the finest players competing under championship conditions, but was envisioned as a course that would offer friendly competition for members and guests of a private club and resort. However, fanatics and pros have taken note of the perfectly preserved course and Mid Pines has become a classic gem, which has now played host to many national competitions including the 2002 USGA Senior Women's Amateur Championship.
Â

In addition to Seton Hall and host George Mason, the field features 11 other teams including: Elon, Florida A&M, George Washington, Loyola (Md.), Ohio University, Richmond, St. Bonaventure, UNC Greensboro and William & Mary. Two other BIG EAST competitors, St. John's and Villanova, are also in the field.
