Turner and Ilieva led The Hall with nine kills apiece in the setback.
OGDEN, UTAH – Senior Emilee Turner (Kaysville, Utah) had nine kills in her homecoming tournament, but the Seton Hall women's volleyball team were defeated by Weber State, 3-0 (20-25, 17-25, 20-25), in the 2021 season opener on Friday.
Â
Turner, who hails from Kaysville, Utah, only about 20 minutes from Ogden, Utah where today's match was played, tied for the team lead in kills and had an impressive .368 attack percentage. Sophomore Tsvetelina Ilieva (Sofia, Bulgaria) also had nine kills to go with seven digs.
Â
Junior Raygan Murray (Rocky River, Ohio) led The Hall with 12 digs, while sophomore setter Taylor Jakubowski (Lake in the Hills, Ill.) finished two digs shy of a double-double with 13 assists and eight digs.
Â
SET 1:
Although the opening set was close throughout, the Pirates never trailed. Blocks by Madison Frusha (Huntsville, Texas) and Julie Wilkins (Mason, Ohio) put The Hall up, 18-15, and prompted a Weber State timeout. The Wildcats however, responded with three straight points to tie the set and force a Pirate timeout. A Weber State attack error put The Hall back in front temporarily, but then the Wildcats finished the set with a 7-1 run to upend the Pirates, 25-20.
Â
SET 2:
After leading for most of the first set, the Pirates never led in the second. It was a close set in the early going, but up 10-8, Weber State scored five of the next seven points to grab a 15-10 advantage, and didn't look back. The Wildcats had a .441 attack percentage in the second set in route to a 25-17 victory to take a 2-to-0 match lead.
Â
SET 3:
Weber State jumped out to a 7-1 lead and prompted an early Seton Hall timeout, thanks in part to four aces by Dani Nay. Trailing 19-12, the Pirates scored four straight, including a pair of kills by Perri Lucas (Chicago, Ill.), to cut their deficit to just three points. The Pirates were much more efficient in the third set, out-attacking the Wildcats, .361-to-.237, but Weber State had seven aces in the set and went on to complete the sweep with a 25-20 set three victory.
