JACKSONVILLE, FLA. – Junior Madeline Matheny (Wilmington, Del.) had a match-high 13 kills, but the Seton Hall women's volleyball team fell to Florida International, 3-0 (18-25, 20-25, 23-25), on Friday, snapping its seven-match win streak.

Â
SET 1:
The opening set was a close, back-and-forth affair. With the score tied at four early, Seton Hall scored four straight points and a block by Amanda Rachwal (Bethlehem, Pa.) and Reagan Hopp (Carmel, Ind.) gave it an 8-4 advantage. FIU came back, however, and scored five straight to take a 9-8 lead. From there, neither team grabbed a lead greater than two points until the Panthers assumed control late. An FIU service error pulled The Hall to within one, 17-16, but Florida International scored five of the next six points to take a 22-17 advantage in route to a 25-18 victory. The Pirates mostly defeated themselves in the opening set, recording 10 attack errors on the way to a -.086 attack percentage.
Â
SET 2:
Back-to-back kills by Lucas cut The Hall's deficit to 4-3 early in set two, but Florida International responded with a 7-0 run to take a commanding 11-3 advantage. The Panther burst extended to 10-1 before a kill by Jenna Walsh (Foothill Ranch, Calif.) and blocks by Hopp and Madison Frusha (Huntsville, Texas) snapped the run. Down 20-13, the Pirates scored three straight, including back-to-back kills by Rachwal to cut their deficit to 20-16. The Hall couldn't get closer, however, and fell, 25-20, in set two.
Â
SET 3:
Seton Hall scored four of the first five points to begin the third set. After FIU closed the gap, neither team was able to pull away or take a lead greater than two points. With the score tied at 14, the Pirates scored three straight, and blocks by Walsh and Frusha gave the Pirates a 17-14 lead. With The Hall leading 19-16, the teams started trading mini runs. FIU scored three straight to tie the score at 19 and force a Pirate timeout. Out of the break, The Hall did the same to reclaim their advantage, 22-19. After the Panther timeout, FIU scored six of the final seven points to win the set, 25-23, and claim the match.
