STORRS, CONN. – The Seton Hall women's basketball team fell victim to a 9-0 run early in the first quarter and never recovered, falling to No. 9 Connecticut, 71-38, in Gampel Pavilion on Friday.
Â
Despite trailing, The Hall fought hard to hold their deficit to just 16 at the half, but the Husky defense proved formidable in the third quarter, and UConn pulled away further. Connecticut held the Pirates to just 26.4% shooting for the game and out-rebounded the Pirates, 53-to-25.
Â
Senior Sidney Cooks (Kenosha, Wis.) led The Hall with 10 points. Junior Lauren Park-Lane (Wilmington, Del.) finished with five points, four assists and matched her career-high with six rebounds.
Â
The Story:
A three-pointer by Espinoza-Hunter tied the game at five early, but the Huskies responded with a 9-0 run to take a 14-5 advantage with 5:46 left in the first quarter, and they never looked back.
Â
Park-Lane found Sidney Cooks with a nice kick-out for a baseline jumper to cut UConn's lead to 28-17, but the Huskies scored the next six points to grab a commanding 34-17 lead with 3:02 left in the first half. A layup by Curtessia Dean (Monroe, La.) with five seconds left sent the Pirates into halftime down, 37-21. The Husky defense held The Hall to just 28.6% in the first half and 1-for-9 shooting from three-point range.
Â
Connecticut opened the second half with a 9-2 run to grab a 46-23 lead with 6:18 left in the third quarter. A three-pointer by Park-Lane paused the Huskies' spurt, but UConn immediately started a new run, 10-2, and Seton Hall wasn't able to significantly cut into their deficit thereafter.
