SOUTH ORANGE, N.J. – Graduate student Myles Cale (Middletown, Del.) scored a team-best 16 points, but the Seton Hall men's basketball team fell to St. John's, 84-63, on Monday in the first BIG EAST Conference game held in Walsh Gym since 1985.
Â
Seton Hall never led in the contest as St. John's used a stout, high-pressure defense to limit the Pirates to 30.6% shooting from the floor and force 20 turnovers.
Â
Cale finished with 16 points, four rebounds and three assists. Senior Jared Rhoden (Baldwin, N.Y.) notched a double-double with 12 points and a team-high 12 rebounds. Jamir Harris (North Brunswick, N.J.) and Tray Jackson (Detroit, Mich.) also reached double-figures in scoring, tallying 12 points and 11 points respectively.
Â
What Happened:
Seton Hall had trouble early with St. John's full-court pressure and the Red Storm used that advantage to fuel a 9-1 burst to take a 20-10 lead with 12:51 left before halftime. A dunk by Tyrese Samuel (Montreal, Quebec) and a three-pointer by Jackson cut The Hall's deficit to 20-15, but then St. John's took off again. The Red Storm held the Pirates to just one made field goal over the next 6:53, going on an 20-4 run to claim a commanding 40-19 advantage with 5:02 left before the break.
Â
Trailing 42-21, the Pirates closed the first half with a 15-4 run, powered by eight points from Rhoden, to cut their deficit to 46-36 at halftime. The Pirates shot just 28.9% from the floor in the first 20 minutes, compared to 47.4% for St. John's. Still, thanks to the late run, The Hall found itself down just 10 points at the half.
Â
A three-point play by Harris brought the Pirates to within eight points, 55-47, but St. John's answered with a game-defining 20-4 run to give it a commanding 75-51 lead with 6:58 left to play. Seton Hall was held to just one field goal over 9:38 in the middle of the second half as the Red Storm lead grew to as large as 27 points.
