NEW YORK - Freshman Taylor Hill (Little Falls, N.J.) of the Seton Hall softball team was a dominant hitter during the BIG EAST season, and she parlayed one of the best rookie performances in program history into winning BIG EAST Freshman of the Year honors, the league office announced Wednesday. Hill is the second Pirate ever to claim the award given to the conference's best rookie.
Hill, who is also a first-team All-BIG EAST selection, hit .449 with three home runs, a conference-record 12 doubles, one triple, 15 runs scored and 25 RBI in 23 conference games. In conference only statistics, she led the BIG EAST in base hits (35) and doubles and was second in batting average, third in RBI and total bases (58), sixth in slugging (.744) and seventh in on-base percentage (.476).
When counting all games, Hill still ranks tied for first in the BIG EAST in doubles (15), fourth in RBI (36), seventh in batting average (.373) and ninth in slugging (.612).
Hill earned five BIG EAST weekly award nods during the season. On March 28, she was named to the BIG EAST Weekly honor roll after going 5-for-10 with a double and five RBI at Butler. On April 18, she was named both the BIG EAST Player of the Week and Freshman of the Week after going wild at Georgetown, hitting 8-for-11 with six extra-base hits, 13 RBI and five runs scored. On May 2, she again made the Weekly Honor Roll after going 5-for-10 at the plate and scored a pair of runs at Villanova. Then on May 9, she was Freshman of the Week after hitting 4-for-7 with a triple, two runs scored, a walk, a stolen base and an RBI at St. John's.
In Seton Hall single-season history, Hill's .373 batting average and 15 doubles rank her tied for fifth all-time. She is tied with Alexis Walkden (2015-18), who is the only other Pirate to garner BIG EAST Freshman of the Year honors.
Hill was also named Seton Hall's Co-Freshman Female Athlete of the Year.
