South Orange, N.J. — Two first half goals and an impressive defensive effort led the Seton Hall women's soccer team to a 2-0 victory over Saint Joseph's on Sunday afternoon at Owen T. Carroll Field.
Freshman Emma Sheehan (Argyle, Texas) got on the Pirates (2-1-1) on the board first before sophomore Natalie Tavana (Middletown, N.J.) doubled The Hall's tally at the 36 minute mark. The Seton Hall back line that featured sophomore Chiara Pucci (Munich, Germany), sophomore Rachel Gerrie (Littleton, Colo.) and junior Alex Fuggle (London, England) kept the Hawks' attack quiet all game as they put up only six shots and one shot on goal.
How It Happened
The Pirates controlled the pace from the opening whistle. 12 minutes in, Saint Joe's played the ball in their own half and Sheehan made her run for the ball and took the pass away. She then saw the goalkeeper off her line and flicked it past her into an open net for opening score of the contest.
Seton Hall would put up three more shots to the Hawks' zero and it believed to have a second goal in the 29th minute but freshman Maddy DeCola (Mahopac, N.Y.) was called offsides. However, six minutes later, the Pirates were on the attack again as sophomore Phoebe Hampson (Cheshire, England ) pushed the ball forward and it found Tavana. Tavana created open space for herself in the box and drove the ball into the bottom right corner, giving the Pirates a 2-0 lead.
Despite a stronger second half for Saint Joseph's, the Hawks couldn't get past the Seton Hall defense as the backline, along with senior Grace Gordon (Chester Springs, Pa.) produced their first clean sheet of the season.
