NEW YORK – Seton Hall's Shelby Smith (Friendswood, Texas) was named BIG EAST Co-Pitcher of the Week and Abby Wingo (Portland, Ore.) was named to the BIG EAST Weekly Honor Roll, the conference announced on Monday.
Smith was stellar in all three of her appearances this past weekend at the Jeannine McHaney Memorial Classic at Texas Tech. She began her weekend with a two-hit complete game shutout while setting a new career-high with 12 strikeouts against North Dakota. Smith followed that up with another double-digit strikeout performance, fanning 10 and allowing just two runs in a one-run victory over Texas Tech. Smith was able to work her way out of trouble in the final inning against the Red Raiders, stranding the tying and winning runs in scoring position to end the game.
Wingo was an on-base machine for the Pirates, batting .533 with a .588 on base percentage to go with four doubles, three RBI and six runs scored. Wingo had three multi-hit performances, highlighted by her 2-for-3 performance with an RBI and three runs scored against North Dakota on Friday. She also had two hits in Saturday night's victory over Texas Tech.
The Pirates open BIG EAST play this weekend as they travel to Storrs for a three-game series against UConn beginning on Friday.
