NEW YORK – A pair of Pirates earned BIG EAST weekly honors for their performances this past week. ABBY WINGO was named BIG EAST Player of the Week, while SHELBY SMITH landed on the BIG EAST Weekly Honor Roll, the conference announced Monday.
Wingo earns Player of the Week honors for the first time this season after batting a team-best .474 with a home run and eight RBI during the Pirates' 4-1 week. The senior had three multi-hit performances, the first of which was a 3-for-5 outing with the walk-off two-run double in Wednesday's 11-10 comeback victory over Rider. Wingo kept the magic at the plate going over the weekend at Lehigh, a series in which the Pirates took two out of three. Wingo had two hits and an RBI in the opener on Friday, while her three-run homer in the finale on Saturday helped propel the Pirates to a dominating 8-0 win. She now has reached base in each of her last 20 games and has also recorded at least one hit in 19 of her last 20.
Smith shouldered the load in the circle much of this past week for the Pirates, amassing a 2.06 ERA across 17 innings of work and earning the win in all three of her appearances. In Saturday's 8-0 win at Lehigh, Smith pitched all six innings without allowing a run and striking out five. She also came on in relief in Saturday's 11-inning win over the Mountain Hawks, working the final five innings without allowing a run and surrendering just two hits.
The Pirates return to action on Tuesday with a road non-conference doubleheader at Drexel at 2 p.m.
