NEW YORK – The Pirates were once again heavily featured in the BIG EAST weekly softball awards which were announced by the league office on Monday afternoon. Shelby Smith (Friendswood, Texas) received BIG EAST Pitcher of the Week honors, while Kelsey Carr (Ridgewood, N.Y.) and Abby Wingo (Portland, Ore.) landed on the BIG EAST Weekly Honor Roll.
Smith is named BIG EAST Pitcher of the Week for the second time this season after pitching the 21st no-hitter in Seton Hall softball history on Saturday at Providence. In that game, Smith struck out eight batters in an 11-1 victory to capture the first no-hitter by a Pirate since Ashley Forsyth's perfect game in 2010. The senior was dominant over the back half of her gem, retiring the final 10 batters she faced to finish the job. Smith also picked up the win in the circle on Wednesday against Fairleigh Dickinson, pitching five innings and not allowing an earned run while striking out five. On the week, Smith allowed zero earned runs over 11 innings of work and struck out 13 batters.
Carr picked up her sixth BIG EAST weekly honor by landing on the Honor Roll after a terrific two-way week. The junior batted a team-best .571 at the plate with a home run and 10 RBI, as well as a five inning victory in the circle on Friday in which she did not allow an earned run. Carr drove in a run in all five games she appeared in this week, including driving in multiple runs in all three games of the weekend sweep at Providence. In addition to Carr's win in the circle on Friday, she also went 2-for-3 with a pair of RBI at the plate. In Sunday's series finale, Carr again went 2-for-3 with a home run and four RBI. Since the calendar flipped to April, Carr is batting .550 in BIG EAST contests and .541 across all games.
Wingo kept her hot streak at the plate going this past week, batting .526 with a home run, seven RBI and a 1.414 OPS. The senior also extended her hitting streak to 16 games to match Yasmin Harrell's program record, and Wingo's on-base streak now sits at 31 straight. She had a monster doubleheader on Wednesday against Fairleigh Dickinson, going a combined 5-for-6 with a home run, two doubles and six runs batted in. Wingo would then go 4-for-10 over the weekend at Providence, driving in a run and scoring a run herself in the series opener on Friday.
The Pirates return home for the final six games of the regular season, beginning with a crucial three-game set against Villanova beginning on Friday.
