South Orange, N.J. – Five members of the Seton Hall softball team were named to the College Sports Communicators' Academic All-District Team: junior Hannah Alexander (Wrightstown, N.J.), sophomore Olivia Gilbert (Johnston, R.I.), senior Abby Wingo (Portland, Ore.), junior Kelsey Carr (Ridgewood, N.Y.) and senior Shelby Smith (Friendswood, Texas).
The All-District team recognizes the nation's top softball student-athletes for their combined performances on the diamond and in the classroom. Athletes must have at least a 3.5 GPA. Academic All-District honorees advance to the CSC Academic All-America ballot. First-, second and third-team Academic All-America® honorees will be announced June 6. Teams can only nominate up to five players and Seton Hall was one of only two teams in the BIG EAST that had five players qualify.
Alexander has played in 40 games this season, starting 39 of them as the team's primary catcher in 2023. The junior posted a .300 batting average with 11 RBI during BIG EAST play this season. Alexander is a double major in management and marketing.
Gilbert has started all 58 games at first base in 2023 for the Pirates, sporting a .295 batting clip with eight home runs and 37 RBI. The sophomore was named to the All-Tournament Team at last week's BIG EAST Championship after slugging a pair of home runs, including the game-tying solo shot against DePaul in the opening round. Gilbert is working towards a degree in finance.
Wingo has put together one of the best offensive seasons in Pirate history. Her 69 base hits on the season are a new program record, as was her 19-game hitting streak from earlier in the year. She was named BIG EAST Defensive Player of the Year and was named to the All-BIG EAST First Team. Wingo is a sport management and marketing major who will officially earn her degree next week.
Carr has been an absolute star all season for the Pirates as she was named BIG EAST Pitcher of the Year and was a unanimous All-BIG EAST First Team selection. The junior has compiled a 1.94 ERA in 119.1 innings in the circle to go along with a team-leading 12 home runs and 48 RBI at the plate. Carr is working towards a degree in psychology.
Smith has also been a terrific two-way weapon for the Pirates, sporting a 2.63 ERA in the circle and a .338 average with eight home runs at the plate. She was named the Most Outstanding Player of the 2023 BIG EAST Championshp after going 8-for-13 with two home runs, three doubles and 11 RBI during the Pirates' run to the BIG EAST title. Smith also tossed the 21st no-hitter in Seton Hall history back on April 22 against Providence. Smith is a management and entrepreneurship major.
