SOUTH ORANGE, N.J. – The Seton Hall women's volleyball team invited clients of JESPY House to their practice on Friday to enhance their community service initiatives and teach their sport.
Â
Seton Hall student-athletes had the opportunity to chat with JESPY House clients in both a large group and smaller breakout sessions. The Pirates taught how to properly stretch and warmup as well as how to hit and dig a volleyball. The practice concluded with a fun 6-on-6 match that included both Seton Hall players and JESPY House clients on both teams.
Â
"We are thrilled to be working with the JESPY House and giving back to our local community," said Seton Hall volleyball head coach Shannon Thompson. "JESPY House does such a wonderful job of assisting and improving the lives of adults dealing with disabilities. They come and support us at our matches and this is a fun way we can support them and teach them a little about our sport."
Â
For 45 years JESPY House in South Orange has been a champion for furthering and fostering independence for adults with intellectual and developmental disabilities. Â Clients learn self-direction, choice and independent community living.
Â
During the 2023 volleyball season, clients of JESPY House often attended Seton Hall matches. Friday's practice was an opportunity for the Pirates to show their thanks and continue to foster a budding relationship between the two entities.
Â
"It was such a fun experience to meet the members of the JESPY House and teach them how to play volleyball," said Seton Hall freshman Rylee Nelson. "We all had a great time when we played the 6-on-6 game. I can't wait for many more opportunities to hang out with them."
Â
The volleyball team plans on visiting JESPY House on Feb. 20, but this time the clients will do the teaching. Clients plan on teaching the team how to play basketball.
