Pirates Begin Play at Shark Invitational, Monday
4/14/2024 8:15:00 AM | Men's Golf
ROSLYN, N.Y. - The Seton Hall men's golf team will return to action on Monday for the first two of three rounds of action at the Shark Invitational at Engineers Country Club, April 15-16.
Â
Tournament Details:
SHARK INVITATIONAL
Host:Â Long Island University
Location:Â Roslyn, N.Y.
Course:Â Engineers Country Club
Dates:Â April 15-16, 2024
Â
THE COURSE
Engineers Country Club is a historic golf club established in 1917 by members of the prestigious Engineers Club of Manhattan. The club's 140-acre course in Roslyn Harbor, New York was designed by English architect and golf professional Herbert Strong, and it is still regarded as one of the most challenging and exciting courses in the area.
Â
Our course is known for its severely undulating greens and some of the boldest and largest putting surfaces on Long Island. It is a true test of golf, and our members love the challenge and camaraderie that come with playing here.
Â
In addition to offering a world-class golf experience, Engineers Country Club also has a rich history in the world of professional golf. The club hosted the PGA Championship in 1919, won by Jim Barnes, and the United States Amateur Championship in 1920, won by Chick Evans. Our signature 14th hole, which for a time had been abandoned, has now been reintegrated to the main golf course and is open for play. This short 90-yard par three with a classic postage stamp green was dubbed the "Two or Twenty Hole" because in 1919 Bobby Jones and Gene Sarazen both took double figures on the tricky hole.
Â
THE FIELD
In addition to Seton Hall and host LIU, the field features teams from Adelphi, Bryant, FDU, Hartford, Holy Cross, Hofstra, Manhattan, Merrimack and Siena.Â
Â
THE SETON HALL LINEUP
Seton Hall will be bringing its entire lineup to the Shark Invitational.

LAST TIME OUT
Graduate student Wenliang Xie (Zhaoqing, China) shot a 4-under-par, 67, in Sunday's final round to lift the Seton Hall men's golf team to a third-place finish at the Princeton Invitational.
Â
Xie continued his remarkable graduate season with another dazzling round on Sunday. He had seven birdies on the day, including birdies in five of his last seven holes to finish with a 4-under-par, 67. Xie finished just one stroke behind a trio of individual champions. For the tournament, Xie tied for fourth among 75 individual golfers with a 5-under-par, 71-70-67-208.
Â
Remarkably, this was Xie's fourth consecutive sub-par tournament and the sixth in his last seven tournaments dating back to the fall season. He now has 13 sub-par tournaments for his career, which ties him with Pirates legend Lloyd Jefferson Go for most in Seton Hall history.
Â
As a team, The Hall shot a 4-over-par, 288, in round three to finish third. For the tournament, the Pirates were 5-over-par with a 290-279-288-857. Host Princeton won the event at 9-under-par. Howard University finished second just one stroke ahead of The Hall. Georgetown, Seton Hall's lone BIG EAST competition, tied for ninth at 33-over-par.
Â
THE FORMAT
The teams will play five golfers and count the four lowest scores per round.
Â
THE SCHEDULE
The field will play 36 continuous holes on Monday and one final round on Tuesday. Both days will begin  with a shotgun at 9:00 a.m. Seton Hall will be paired with golfers from LIU, Siena and Holy Cross on Monday.
