Lally Shines for Pirates in Round 2 at Rancho Santa Fe
5/14/2024 8:48:00 PM | Men's Golf
RANCHO SANTA FE, CALIF. – Sophomore David Lally (Wicklow, Ireland) fired a 2-over-par, 72, to fuel the Seton Hall men's golf team in round two at the 2024 NCAA Rancho Santa Fe Regional on Tuesday.
Â
The beautiful, but difficult course, particularly its back nine, caused fits for the Pirates for a second straight day. Lally was the lone Seton Hall golfer not to have a double-bogey on the back nine. Lally had two birdies and was 1-under-par at the turn, and settled with the top Seton Hall round of the tournament, a 2-over-par, 72. Through 36 holes, Lally is tied for 44th place overall with a 9-over-par, 77-72-149.
Â
Cal's Sampson Zheng continues to be the individual leader. He's 5-under-par after 36 holes.
Â
As a team, The Hall shot only one stroke worse on Tuesday, finishing with a 23-over-par, 303. The Pirates came into the tournament as the 13th-ranked team in the field, but has a chance to overtake Wright State in the final day to finish 12th. The Raiders are only one stroke ahead of The Hall entering Wednesday's final round.
Â
For a second straight day, North Florida leads the team field and is 3-over-par. The top five teams after Wednesday's round will advance to the National Championship. Currently, the top five teams are North Florida, California (+4), West Virginia (+5), Oklahoma State (+6) and Oklahoma (+8). Top-seeded Arizona State is currently seventh at 11-over-par.
Â
Graduate student Wenliang Xie (Burbank, Calif.) was even-par through 10 holes today, but was +5 over holes 11 through 13. He completed the round with five straight pars to finish with a 5-over-par, 75. For the tournament, Xie is tied with Lally for 44th place at 9-over-par with a 74-75-149.
Â
Wanxi Sun (Danville, Calif.) was even-par through 10 holes, but a triple on No. 11 and a double on No. 13 put a damper on an otherwise solid round. He finished with a 7-over-par, 77, on Tuesday. Through 36 holes, the senior is 20-over-par with an 83-77-160.
Â
Jack Bosworth (Daniel Island, S.C.) was the lone Seton Hall golfer to play better on the back nine. The sophomore struggled at the start, bogeying seven of the holes on the front nine, but was only 2-over on the back. For the round, Bosworth shot a 9-over-par, 79. He's currently 14-over-par for the tournament with a 75-79-154.
Â
George Fricker (Woodbridge, England) had three holes with at least a double-bogey, which upended the junior. He was only 2-over-par otherwise. For the round, Fricker was 10-over-par with an 80. Through 36 holes, he's 16-over-par with a 76-80-156.

THE COURSE
Built in 1988 in the ruggedly beautiful terrain of Rancho Santa Fe, one of San Diego's most prestigious communities, The Farms Golf Club, a private, member-owned equity club, was created and built for golf enthusiasts…golfers serious in their commitment to the game and its historical traditions.
Â
Originally designed by Pete, Perry and Alice Dye with assistance from golfing great Tommy Jacobs, The Farms golf course was extensively remodeled in 2000 under the guidance of golf course architect John Fought and his associate, PGA tour professional Tom Lehman.Â
Â
With modifications designed to improve the playability and maintainability of the course, changes included newly reconstructed and re-contoured bent grass putting greens that allow for more undulation and additional hole locations; new teeing areas and bunkering that test a player's ability to visualize and execute the proper shot; a state-of-the-art irrigation system; and a wonderful practice facility featuring a double-ended driving range, complete with target greens and bunkers. Nestled amid gently rolling hills and hollows, several additional water features and newly created high rough landscaping add to the course's beauty and the sense of peaceful seclusion that prevails on this championship course.
