
Reich, Safian Impress in Four-Set Loss at UConn

STORRS, CONN. – Freshman Sadie Reich (Wantagh, N.Y.) had a double-double, but the Seton Hall women's volleyball team fell at Connecticut, 3-1 (11-25, 27-25, 16-25, 19-25), on Friday.

The Pirates were able to outlast UConn, 27-25, in an epic second set that featured 11 ties and six lead changes to tie the match at one set apiece, but the Huskies were able to win sets three and four to close out the match.

Reich had team-highs of 13 kills and 11 digs.  Daria Safian (Moscow, Russia) had 11 kills, only three attack errors and a team-best .258 attack percentage. Freshman setter Emilee Fuller (Louisville, Ky.) finished with 11 assists and eight digs.

SET 1:
Seton Hall scored the first point of the match, but trailed for the remainder of the set. Down 10-6, Connecticut scored six of the next eight points to take a commanding 16-8 advantage. A block by Rowan Carr (Lakeville, Minn.) cut The Hall's deficit to 16-10, but the Huskies responded with a set-ending 9-1 run to win, 25-11. The Pirates had a -.200 attack percentage in the opening set.Â

A kill by Carr gave The Hall an early 4-2 lead, but Connecticut answered with a 7-1 spurt to grab a 9-5 advantage. Down 13-11, the Pirates scored three straight, and a kill by Reich gave them a 14-13 lead. The Huskies tied the score at 14, but Seton Hall scored four of the next five points, and a block by Asli Subasili (Tekirdag, Turkiye) gave it an 18-15 lead and forced a UConn timeout. UConn rallied and entered set point, 24-23. The Pirates scored four of the next five points, however, and a block by Safian gave them a dramatic, come-from-behind, 27-25, victory. Â

The Pirates fell in set three despite committing just two attack errors. The Hall had a .233 attack percentage, but UConn connected on a .452 rate. With the score tied at 12 in the third set, Connecticut scored five straight points to grab a 17-12 lead. A kill by Safian cut The Hall's deficit to 20-16, but the Huskies scored the final five points of the set to win, 25-16.
