NEW YORK, N.Y. – Off the back of an explosive first full week as a starter, Naya Martinez earned BIG EAST Freshman of the Week honors, the conference announced on Monday.
After playing sparingly through the first two months of the season, Naya Martinez cemented herself as the Pirates' everyday third baseman in the last week, starting all five games at the hot corner following a brief stint against Villanova the prior week.
Â
Martinez opened the week driving in one run and scoring another in a doubleheader sweep of Army. When the Pirates traveled to Providence, Rhode Island, to take on Providence, her bat came alive. Martinez collected her first career home run and drove in three runs in the Pirates' 6-5 seventh inning loss to the Friars to open the series. She closed out the series with another three-RBI performance, this time in an 8-2 Seton Hall victory. By the week's end, Martinez totaled .333/.368/.556 with four runs scored, one double, one home run, seven RBI and a steal.
What's Next
The Pirates return to action Wednesday, April 9, when FDU travels to Mike Sheppard Sr. Field to take on the Pirates in a doubleheader clash. First pitch for game one is slated for 2 p.m and the game will be streamed on FloSports.
