Â
Freshman Sadie Reich (Wantagh, N.Y.) had a breakout performance against Maryland, erupting for a career-high 23 kills. On Saturday against Coppin State, she had 19 more to go with a career-high seven blocks and six digs. Gwen Adler (Barrington, Ill.), Hanna Labanowska (Olszewska Stara, Poland) and Asli Subasili (Tekirdag, Turkiye) all had double-doubles in the victory over the Eagles.
Â
For her efforts, Reich was named BIG EAST Freshman of the Week on Monday.
Â
SCOUTING GEORGETOWN
Seton Hall and Georgetown will continue its long rivalry with the Pirates owning a slim 25-24 edge in the all-time series. The Pirates swept the season series last year, including a thrilling come-from-behind victory in the season finale in Washington. Overall, The Hall has won 12 of the last 14 meetings. Georgetown's last victory in Walsh Gym came in 2015.
Â
Georgetown is coming off an 11-19 season in 2024 and placed 10th in the BIG EAST with a 4-14 conference record. After losing four matches in a row, the Hoyas closed out the 2024 season with a sweep of Butler in Washington. They did not play in the postseason.
Â
This season, Georgetown was again picked to finish 10th in the BIG EAST, according to the conference's preseason coaches' poll. Much of the Hoyas' defense remains intact with the return of Vaughan Anoa'I and Kamryn Lee-Caracci, who were the team's leaders in blocks a year ago. Dionna Mitchell returns to lead the offense after averaging a team-best 3.36 kills per set last year.
Â
The Hoyas closed out their non-conference schedule with a 7-6 record. They enter BIG EAST play having won six of their last seven matches. Last weekend, Georgetown won two of three matches at Clemson, only losing to the host in five sets. They defeated Norfolk State in five and Charleston Southern in four sets. The Hoyas currently rank fifth in the BIG EAST in aces per set. Grace Albaugh's 0.52 per set ranks fourth among all individual players.
Â
SCOUTING VILLANOVA
Seton Hall and Villanova will continue their long rivalry on Saturday. The Wildcats currently own a 35-18 all-time series lead. Villanova has dominated the series of late, winning the last three matches and 10 of the last 12 matches. Last year, the teams only met once with Villanova scoring a four-set victory in Walsh Gym.
Â
Villanova is coming off a 17-14 season in 2024 and placed sixth in the BIG EAST with a 9-9 conference record. The Wildcats were swept by Connecticut in their regular season finale, but later that week, defeated the third-seeded Huskies in five sets to advance to the semifinals of the BIG EAST Tournament. Villanova fell to No. 2 Marquette in straight sets in the semis. Abby Harrell was named to the All-BIG EAST Team, and Campbell McKinnon earned All-Freshman honors.
Â
This season, Villanova was picked to finish fifth in the BIG EAST, according to the conference's preseason coaches' poll. Both Harrell and McKinnon were named to the Preseason All-BIG EAST Team. In addition to their impressive returnees, Villanova welcomed six newcomers, including two impact transfers.
Â
The Wildcats closed out their non-conference schedule with an impressive 9-2 record, which includes a five-set victory at Notre Dame on Aug. 31. Villanova opened the season with eight straight victories before falling to South Dakota and Drake last weekend. They closed out the weekend with a five-set victory over Wichita State. The Wildcats currently lead the BIG EAST in hitting percentage, assists per set and kills per set.
