
Pirates Fall in Four Sets to Hoyas in BIG EAST Opener

SOUTH ORANGE, N.J. – Freshman Sadie Reich (Wantagh, N.Y.) had a match-high 18 kills, but the Seton Hall women's volleyball team fell to Georgetown, 3-1 (22-25, 25-21, 18-25, 17-25), in its BIG EAST Conference opener on Friday.

The Hall was able to even the match with a strong second-set showing, but ultimately was outlasted by the Hoyas. The Pirates have been besieged by injury in recent weeks and have been forced to go with a young group. Eight of the 11 players to see action tonight for Seton Hall are freshmen or sophomores.

Reich had another strong showing with 18 kills, a .233 attack percentage and eight digs. Sophomore Gwen Adler (Barrington, Ill.) narrowly missed a double-double, finishing with a match-high 32 assists to go with nine digs. Senior Asli Subasili (Tekirdag, Turkiye) had eight kills, only two attack errors, four digs and four blocks.

SET 1:
The opening set featured eight ties and six lead changes, and the Pirates appeared to be in control of the set until Georgetown rallied late. A kill by Hanna Labanowska (Olszewnica Star, Poland) gave The Hall a 21-18 lead and forced a Hoyas timeout. Out of the break, the Hoyas went on a 7-0 run to enter set point. Two points later, Georgetown completed the comeback, stunning Seton Hall with a 25-22 set one victory. After a strong start, Seton Hall finished with only a -.027 attack percentage in the opening frame.

SET 2:
Seton Hall started the second set on fire, scoring the first six points. A Georgetown attack error extended The Hall's lead to 15-9, but the Hoyas responded with four straight points to force a Pirates timeout. A block by Subasili boosted The Hall's advantage back to six points, 20-14, but the Hoyas answered with a 6-1 run to cut their deficit to 21-20. This time, the Pirates were able to stave off the Georgetown rally, scoring four of the final five points to claim set two, 25-21.

Just as Seton Hall led for all of set two, Georgetown led for the vast majority of set three. The Hoyas used a blistering .440 attack percentage in the third frame to grab a 2-1 match list. Down by as many as five points, the Pirates rallied to cut their deficit to 18-17, and forced a Hoyas' timeout. Out of the break, Georgetown finished the set with a 7-1 run.

Down 3-1 early in set four, Georgetown when on a 10-2 run to grab a commanding 11-5 advantage. A kill by Rowan Carr (Lakeville, Minn.) cut The Hall's deficit to 18-16, but the Hoyas closed out the match with a 7-1 burst. The Hall was limited to a .031 attack percentage in the fourth set.
