WEST POINT, N.Y. - The Seton Hall women's soccer team had its five-match win streak snapped on Monday night, falling 1-0 on the road at Army.
After falling behind in the second half, the Pirates (5-1) continued to apply pressure in hopes of pulling off their second-straight comeback victory. In their previous outing, Seton Hall overcame a 1-0 defecit to best Delaware, 2-1, in extra time.
Both teams struggled to find quality looks at the opposition's goal on the night. Each squad mustered just four shots respectively that landed on frame, a number that is a season-low for the Pirates to this point in the year.
Seton Hall looked threatening in the first 20 minutes of action, producing several moments that looked as if the Pirates may secure an early advantage on the scoreboard. Freshman D'Yonna Riley (Washingtonville, N.Y.) made good use of a set piece when she used a 16th minute free kick to force the first save of the day from Army goalkeeper Linda Rosas.
Nearly three minutes later, Rosas again came up big for the home side, making a diving save on an attempt from junior Brittney Albrecht (Mahwah, N.J.) to keep the match scoreless.
Junior forward Katie Ritter (Hagerstown, Md.) entered the game as a 27th minute substitute and quickly asserted herself as a threat, firing two shots prior to the end of the period, but they both failed to test Rosas further. Sophomore Kristina Meier (Paramus, N.J.) also misfired on a long range effort that proved to be the Pirates' final chance of the half. Seton Hall went into the break with a 5-4 advantage in shots.
Making her second start in three matches after making six stops in a shutout of Monmouth, goalkeeper Alyssa Kelly (Southampton, N.J.) had little to do in the first 45 minutes as none of the Black Knights four shot attempts made her work.
In the opening minutes following the restart however, Kelly featured prominently as she was called into action twice in order to keep the game deadlocked. Following the second stop, SHU quickly found Ritter in an offensive position. The junior beat her defender and was left with a one-on-one opportunity, but her shot sailed wide of the right upright.
In the 66th minute, Ritter's activity resulted in another opportunity as her shot attempt tested Rosas who was again up to the task. For the night, Ritter launched a career-high six shots at net, but only one ended on frame.
Just over seven minutes later, the hosts found themselves on top after capitalizing on an opportunity from just outside the SHU goal line. Substitute Anna Lail was able to get on the end of a pass from Kim An on the right side and send it home to give Army a 1-0 lead.
Despite the one goal advantage, the final 15 minutes was not without tense moments for the Black Knights as the Pirates continued to attack. Seton Hall created a number of looks at goal, including a corner kick opportunity with 15 seconds left on the clock, but was unable to find the finishing touch, ultimately suffering their first setback of 2012.
At the final whistle, Seton Hall held a 15-10 advantage in total shot attempts.
With the victory, the Black Knights improved to 3-3 overall on the year after handing the Pirates their first loss of the season by a 1-0 score for the second consecutive year. Army blanked a visiting SHU squad to open the 2011 West Point Invitational, earning a one-goal victory and taking the first ever meeting between the two schools.
Seton Hall will look to start a new winning streak when they return to the pitch on Friday, Sept. 7, against LaSalle in their first of two games at the Villanova tournament. Kick-off is scheduled for 1:30 p.m. from Philadelphia, Pa.
