WASHINGTON, D.C. - The Seton Hall women's soccer team faced a stiff test in its regular season finale on Saturday, traveling to face a #15/#9 Georgetown team that has not lost a home match since 2011 and ultimately dropped a 2-0 decision.
The Pirates (5-11-2, 3-6-0) held a Hoya offense that entered the day scoring at a nation-leading clip of over three goals per game to five shots on net but could not recover after going down early in the first half.
With less than 60 seconds gone after kickoff, GU forward Audra Ayotte was the beneficiary of a nice piece of build-up orchestrated from the back by defender Mary Kroening and worked through midfielder Marina Paul who both received assists as Ayotte slotted home her sixth goal of the year from in close to give the home 11 a 1-0 advantage they would never relinquish.
Less than nine minutes later, Ayotte helped Georgetown widen the gap when she sent a ball through the box that found the foot of Daphne Corboz, the BIG EAST leader in points per game, who found the back of the net to account for what would be the final score of the day for either side.
Sophomore Amanda Gulli (Toms River, N.J.) nearly pulled one back for The Hall in the 33rd minute with a shot from the GU area but Hoya goalkeeper Emma Newins was able to get her foot on it to deny the initial chance and the follow up from senior Marie Klemme (Berlin, Germany) sailed high.
In the second half, the Pirates were outshot, 5-1, but goalkeeper Jennifer Pettigrew (Kearny, N.J.) stopped all three Hoya attempts that found the target to hold the score at 2-0.
Freshman Frankie Maier (Oradell, N.J.) tested Newins in the 85th minute as part of a late push but the GU keeper made the save to seal her fifth shutout of the season.
Georgetown (15-1-2, 7-1-1) finishes the regular season on a four-game winning streak and will be the second seed in the 2013 BIG EAST Championship behind regular season champions Marquette.
Seton Hall finishes conference play with three wins, including a victory over a ranked Butler squads and stands as one of three BIG EAST teams who did not allow more than two goals in a single conference match all year (DePaul, Marquette).
The Pirates were once again strong at home as well, recording a 5-2-2 record in nine matches at Owen T. Carroll Field. SHU also had five different players honored by the conference with weekly awards throughout the season.
After entering the day one point out of a postseason berth, the loss concludes the 2013 season for Seton Hall. Klemme and Pettigrew were joined in an accomplished and decorated class of players competing for the final time as a Pirate by Brittney Albrecht (Mahwah, N.J.), Ashley Clarke (Paramus, N.J.), Meghan Hayes (Fredon, N.J.), Katie Ritter (Hagerstown, Md.) and Amie Ruhe (Monrovia, Md.).
