SOUTH ORANGE, N.J. - The Seton Hall women's soccer team wrapped up the 2014 campaign on Friday night, falling to visiting RV/#22 Georgetown, 8-0.
The performance was an outlier for the Pirates who finish at 3-10-5 overall and 0-6-3 in the conference (ninth place) in their first year under head coach Rick Stainton despite allowing one goal or less in 13 of 18 matches.
BIG EAST points leader Daphne Corboz opened the scoring for the Hoyas in the fourth minute, sending home a rebound through a crowd after Gina Maiorana (Street, Md.) got down to stop the initial effort from Grace Damaska.
Corboz followed with two more goals while assisting on another, registering the first hat trick conceded by The Hall since Kelsey Haycook of LaSalle scored three times in a September 2012 matchup with the Pirates.
In all, five different Georgetown players found the back of the net with Vanessa Skrumbis tallying two goals and Damaska, Audra Ayotte, and Taylor Pak each collecting one. The result moved the Hoyas to 11-3-4 with a 6-1-2 mark in league play that earned them the #2 seed in the conference tournament
Making her seventh appearance of the fall, Maiorana totaled six stops on the evening for SHU, concluding a season in which she allowed just three goals in her first six matches.
Only six Pirates took the field in all 18 matches during the 2014 season and five of them - Melissa Blevins (Laurel Springs, N.J.), points leader Amanda Gulli (Toms River, N.J.), co-captain Emily Hansinger (Mount Laurel, N.J.), Katie Landes (Stony Point, N.Y.) and Frankie Maier (Oradell, N.J.) - are eligible to return in 2015.
Seven senior members of the Pirates' squad were recognized prior to the match as part of Senior Day festivities; a ceremony that honored Rachel Friedman (Bridgewater, N.J.), Mikayla Hickey (Salem, N.H.), Kristin Kosch (Mahwah, N.J.), Kristina Meier (Paramus, N.J.), Peggy Nicolle (Wenonah, N.J.), Angie Shehaj (East Brunswick, N.J.) and Alyssa Stipcak (Mt. Airy, Md.) for their contributions to the program.
